That is a failsafe mechanism only.

I'd love to have a go at filming boats but I don't fancy landing a quadcopter on my RIB, tempted to try one of these frames - Home page - and just land in the water.
The problem with using them for commercial applications is once you start charging you then flying for reward and need a commercial pilots licence.

You will need to build that one yourself and heat build up can be a problem - there are some forums about these and those are discussed on this forum

I'd only have a waterproof one as I'm a bit of a coward, plenty of people fly them over water but not only is ruining the model a problem but they sink too!!!
I was thinking of just using some conduit and sealing where the wires come out with hot glue, the motors would have to be open to the elements and they do survive a dunking as long as they're not spinning at the time - as for heat, I have some fairly standard motors that pull under 15 amps at full beans, and happily lift a Gopro and video gear, running off 30amp speed controllers so they should be fine, you really have to be over powering them before they overheat.
Most of this stuff can be very cheap and could almost be sacrificial, just the Gopro you'd not want to loose.

I think the prefered method is the "hover and grab" method
at least that's the one i'l be using
The thing is very stable and easy to catch (On land anyway )
The return home fail safe is a worry though out at sea. As it sets it's GPS home point before it takes off! the thing is to have a timer running, know your battery status and watch the LED's
You can override the failsafe if it decides to go home but I haven't tried that yet...
Here's a short clip from this morning of me practicing the old hover catch release.
You'll have to excuse the scruffy git, it's my day off

I've researched a few and must agree, the one's fitted with a good brushless gimbal give much better results. the phantom certainly looks more novice friendly, I'm very tempted with the phantom vision, 25 min flying time and it comes with FPV built in, but the built in camera doesn't offer the quality as the Gopro with gimbal mounted versions, most of the pro's seem to be using the Gopro 2.7k video setting and then digital zooming in, during the editing, which is good for excluding any unwanted prop view, some editing programs also include video stabilizing software with fantastic results. As you mention, the more invested the better quality the results are for sure. I don't think you'll find one that'll keep up with the Bananashark though.
Tidy vid and pics above btw.

I wouldn't fancy trying to catch one at sea on a bobbing boat - again, not brave enough to take a Gopro over water without a case either. Hobbyking do prop guard not which could be a solution.
I had a DJI controller decide to take the model off where it felt like, fortunately hit a tree before it got very far, it was a cloudy day and the GPS signal wasn't great. The great thing about theses is it's not easy to do much damage to them.

you don't have to use the mount they provide for the GoPro, I have mine in it's water proof housing

They are quite robust, I've crashed mine a few times! And apart from having the change the props, it's been fine
Also you'll find a lot of pilot error, these things are easy to fly but it's silly stuff like not waiting long enough for the GPS home lock.
Or in my case pushing it to far on the battery.....lol
I do a recalibration after a stuff but it's never been out.
A lot of people who have problems with "flyaways" aren't installing the default configuration parameters after a firmware upgrade.

I do have an old Gopro on my black one, I don't use a case as hope the arms will protect it in a crash, works really well but you do see the props in the video, it's made for video flying and having fun so not really a problem, I've not fitted my gimbal to the other one as I don't have a Gopro3 yet as can;t decide to get an older version or the latest.
Like you say, they are pretty tough, I hit a tree and it fell 30 feet with no damage, I expect where I was flying and the weather contributed to a poor GPS signal as I've never had an issue since.

It does amaze me the number of people who crash them and it's never their fault....
I can honestly say that all my miss haps are operator error to some extent
Here's one of My favourite Phantom video's.......Sorry, but they're not RIB's

Course it wasn't my fault!! I do have the remains of a tricopter that I flipped and had no idea which way up it was though.
This is a Gopro mounted on the wing of an old glider, not quite in the same league as your video though, those sorts of views are rare at East Head this time of year, well, those views are rare at East Head period!
