Drones

Hi there ,
Is anybody flying drones from a RIB ?
Must be great to film a RIB in motion with a drone which follows the boat .
What makes me hesitating is that according to my knowledge only the splash drone is kind of waterproof.
Would hurt to submerge a 1000 quid drone in the water ..
The DJI MAVIC seems to be good but landings on a RIB shouldn't fail .
Anybody ?

Drones from ribs

Hi Bushrider

Check out this video of the Fastnet Rock was taken from my rib, both static and when moving at speed by Tom Vaughan using a DJI Phantom pro.

He is a very skilled drone operator and was able to catch the drone by hand ( the Phantom has large handles on the base which make this possible) when it returned to the rib.

It takes a bit of practise but not too hard. I'd suggest you get very comfortable flying it on land before taking it afloat. Disable all the return to home features otherwise it'll want to be landing where it took off (over water but no boat there) when the battery runs out etc. If you want to see what's possible just have a look at some of the Volvo Ocean race drone footage on youtube - very impressive especially in those conditions.

I've got a DJI Spark which is the entry level model from DJI. Easy to fly, fits in a large pocket folded up and takes good photos and video. Has a "follow me" mode which is supposed to be good up to 30mph. I've had limited success with it so far but that's likely to be the operator rather than the technology!

Thanks guys - good info !
The DJI Spark could be a good drone to start with and it's not too pricey.
What I dont like with the splash drone like with the old Phantoms that they are really bulky and difficult to store on a RIB .
The DJIs are by far easier to carry .

if you are just starting out with drones, the ryze tello is a cheap introduction to decent quality kit. your phone is the controller so the range is limited compared to the more expensive drones, but given its low weight you wont need to register it when the new legislation goes through. ive liked mine a lot, and probably use it more than my phantom 2 as its small enough to take places i wouldnt want to lug the big boy. the camera isnt bad at all, but its not 4k and it doesnt have a mechanical gimble (but it does do digital image stabilisation so its still pretty smooth). if it did go into the sea, its only 90 quid lost rather than 500.

I wouldnt recommend anything else cheap or nasty. they cant fight a moderate breeze and give pretty disappointing video quality.

Ordered the Tello but with the controller.
I fly petrol powered RC aircrafts but to start flying a drone probably the Tello is the right choice - especially for the first attempts at sea [emoji106]

That was a while ago now, we haven't tried out the "follow" option yet. Next time will probably be playing about in the surf in the Thundercat
