Ebay seller fees now mostly removed.

Has anyone else picked up on the fact that since late October Ebay has removed seller fees from most private listings? They still charge on vehicles and for business sellers but everything else is free to list and sell.

Removing fees makes a huge difference to the net you receive on items in the hundreds, losing that deduction enables more competitive pricing for faster sales too.

Makes it a much more worthwhile seller platform again.

Since the fees have been removed I've sold, but also bought a lot more.

The other thing i like is the " money from sales pot "is back ,this enables you to sell some unwanted goods and spend it on some other un nesscesary items ,without ever touching the bank account

Yes OB agree. I've not sold much on Ebay recently after selling a huge amount on there in the previous decade. When I used it to sell a Garmin the other day and decided to buy a hi-fi amp a couple of days later I was surprised to see no fees were deducted and liked the smooth way the balance was applied to the purchase.

I like the click through to discounted postage too with print label at home.

About the first time in a decade they've made changes that have made the platform better for the seller.

A mixture. Most of the stuff I'm selling is the surplus from recent jobs, tiles, tanking paste etc and a couple of old cameras I don't use anymore. Buying is mostly used.

I hadn’t realised Ebay had sold Gumtree, which to be honest I’d use for larger items where postage wasn’t practical or customers weren’t local. Incidentally Ebay has seen its user base decline from its peak in 2018. I’m sure most of it to the likes of Jeff Bezos with cheap imports from China, so it will be purely commercial reasons that fees have been dropped, and not an early Christmas present for customers!

I use Ebay, but for genuine outboards parts, gaskets, fuel connectors and such like, then folk would opt to buy pattern parts or give low ball offers on the off chance you’d sell. It’s a funny old game.

There is an interesting angle to this fee free selling I've just noticed. Private sellers will no longer be paid out automatically in the days following a sale. You will have to remember to manually request funds. If you forget to withdraw Ebay will send funds out quarterly.

There is quite a bit of grumbling about this on the Ebay community forums but it's no different to how things were when funds would go through Paypal.

It is said Ebay is trying to encourage folks to leave the balance untouched until using it for another purchase on Ebay.

That's one thing I actually prefer. When the funds from a sale automatically got sent to my bank account, those "extra" funds just disappeared into everyday spending. Now when I buy something off eBay and those "held" account funds are used to pay for the purchase it feels like a gain.

Despite no logic in it to the overall scheme of finances I absolutely know what you mean. I'd forgotten the funds for the last item I sold the other week and it was a nice surprise when the system offered to take the majority of the funds for my next purpose from that balance.

Facebook Market Place has totally taken over for second hand stuff. I don’t hardly bother looking on eBay in this regard any more.

I think you mean it has produced an alternative platform for mainly local deals, items too heavy to post and cash cowboys, scammers etc.

Now Ebay has removed the fees for private sellers of used items they will probably claw back some of the gains Marketplace made, particularly with items that can be posted.

Out of interest with a couple of specific used items I've bought in the past two weeks with one Ebay had a choice of 110 listed compared to Marketplace with 35, the other Ebay 9 and Marketplace 3.

I wouldn't know as I don't have a Facebook account so can't really compare Facebook Marketplace and eBay, but if you "don't hardly bother looking on eBay" how do you know?

Marketplace is absolutely full of scammers, I'd be very reluctant to send money to a Facebook advert but regularly buy off ebay, far more protection on ebay than Facebook. Facebook is fine for larger bulky local items you can actually go & see before you hand over your money not so good for smaller posted items

Yes for posted items the buyer protection is a good backstop if the item turns out faulty or not as described.

Absolutely. I remember a couple of years back someone local to me was looking for a free henhouse, the following week free chickenwire, then they had the absolute cheek to ask for free hens! Oh and they wanted it delivered too!

I've used ebay for years with pretty much no issues . Sold lots when they had the 'sell for a £1' offer then lots more on the '80% off final fees free listings' offer that arrived fortnightly. Bought lots too including a couple of boats , engines . Safe enough if you're sensible .
Facebook marketplace I've sold a couple of cheap large items, larder fridge, tumble drier for not very much and bought a leather sofa . All local and face to face cash deals BUT there seems to be lots of scams on there . Ok if you want a 50 grand motorhome for £5999 but I've yet to meet anyone that's successfully bought one of these bargains. Seen similar on ebay /gumtree/ apollo duck etc , some bargain boats too but as always if it looks too good to be true it often is.
Bought a motorhome for £50k this year offered on ebay by a private buyer myself with no issues ither than the 550 mile round trip to SW Wales....
