At 1.30pm today Thames Coastguard received a call via Medway Navigation Services that two men had become stranded in the mud, with their dogs, in the River Medway.
The two men were wildfowlers, they had walked to a small island when the tide started to rise rapidly leading to them both getting stuck up to their knees.
Thames Coastguard requested the launch of the RNLI inshore lifeboat from Sheerness and also requested a rescue helicopter to attend on scene.
The two men and their dogs were winched to safety by the rescue helicopter and landed to shore, where they were met by Coastguard Rescue Officers from Sheppey and Medway. No medical assistance was required.
Aimee Neale, Thames Coastguard Watch Officer said,
The two men were fortunate that we were able to assist them quickly today. It is always vital to check tide times before doing this type of activity or any activity near the coast.
