At the North end of Dartmouth we have a ferry which crosses the river on a chain system.....that was up until today! This morning, strong northerly winds and a racing falling tide caused the ferry to break it's chains, it drifted downstream having lost power and crashed in to a pontoon! The ferry carries cars and foot passengers, no-one appears to have been hurt. The Torbay lifeboat arrived on the scene quickly and disembarked the passengers and now firecrews and members of VT marine are assesing the situation.

Those chains are big...it's only just come back from it's annual service too! It must have made for an eventful sunday for the crew though.... that has surely got to be one of the most repetitve jobs going!
