That sounds like a fair arrangement.
Did you fail to reach agreement about the shampoo job for the Golden Lab?

Just had a logburner fitted in my house by a mate who is also Hetas registered and who's self employed fitting these full time.
I bought the stove, removed the old gas fire, laid a new hearth and rendered the surround, he lined the chimney and made all the connections for £250
Its a dirty dirty job though and everything in my house has a fine layer of dust and soot on it now despite keeping doors shut and dust sheets everywhere. I'm glad I did that job before any other decorating etc

Take care with those logs stacked right next to your stove. Those Clearviews get really hot.

If you will employ the professionals then you must be prepared to put up with their standards!

Can't see the difference, which are where and/or whose? The ones with black soles look more like hobbitses feet.

Thread drift. Disgraceful. This type of behavior is worthy of forum expulsion. C'mon mods!?!?

Poor tradesmen? I don't know what you are complaining about with a bit of dust!
Last year a kitchen fitter fixed a double cupboard into a dry-lined wall with very short rawlplugs, leading to £2K worth of china being spread over the new floor (breaking the tiles) having bounced off the new worktop and missing my wife by inches.

hmm, i build and restore fireplaces like yours, and i also fit stoves. there is no legal requirement to be hetas registered - hetas is only a company who offers training in the fitting of solid fuel appliances, its nothing like corgi/gasafe.
also why have you had your chimney lined? liners were designed to get around the problems of having a damaged or lazy flue, all too often i come across people who believe they have to have the chimney lined as a matter of course simply because that is what has been said - usually by the people who stand to make money out of it. think about it, my house, like so many others is over 100yrs old with standard 9inch brick flues, and has had a solid fuel fire under them perfectly fine for all these years. as long as you only poke the flue pipe from the fire through the register plate at the base of the chimney by 2inch and all is well sealed, then you should have no problem at all. oh and saved several hundred quid in the process.
sorry rant over, but id rather be honest with my customers, even at the risk of talking myself out of work, than carry out unecessary work.

I would agree that it's probably unnecessary, but I think you will find it's a requirement under the building regs when replacing a 'controlled' fitting.

I was told for insurance purposes the fire needs a flu, with vermiculite around it (as it is on an outside wall) and signed off by a hetas registered individual?
Are you saying that is not true?
He also said that as of next year, all new burners will need a direct air feed rather than just an air brick putting in.
