Fuel duty

What can I say except SCUM SCUM SCUM!!!

The minute the oil price dips a fraction they stick even more TAX on our fuel - when the oil price rises again because of their crackpot policies we suffer even more!!!

SCUM SCUM SCUM

How would you like to pay the tax instead?

Making the assumption that our government is roughly as wasteful as any other countries, then the tax they collect is all used for something. While fuel duty is lower in some countries, they a) usually pay more tax in other ways and b) can often earn less money on average (accounting for the lower cost of living).

I don't know if there is a cost of living price index that you can use to compare countries (average salaries, relative price of bread, fuel etc) so you can work out how well we really do.

Our fuel duty is higher than almost anywhere in the World - we then pay road tax on top - VAT - etc etc etc. Barking - and you agree with it??? Of course money must be found for the MP's wage rises......

To our American friends that is about $7.50 a gallon!!!

That is a very big assumption - who else could pour billions into the NHS and create such an unholy mess? Or run a totally pointless war??? Or - I better shut up or JK will pull this!!!

I'd be rather sensitive about fuel prices too if I was running a 225!

I get the distinct feeling this is the sound of a dying government desperately trying to win some support by claiming the budget is 'green'.

I wonder how long it'll take for them to waste £2m on a focus group that will determine how sick to the back teeth we are of being treated as cash cows for a terminally inefficient system?

Yes the tax is a lot higher, but it does mean you only pay as you use it.

We could put income tax up instead, and cut fuel tax - what would you prefer?

Actually I would prefer it if people would realise that Gordon was pissing on their backs and telling them it was raining.

The trouble is we don't really have a choice when it comes to fuel - a car is essential.

As I said before - is there any way of telling if we are getting shafted more in this country than others?

Take a look at this:
http://www.aaroadwatch.ie/eupetrolprices/

Despite the general whingeing that goes on from the Swansea massive, we're paying the same (+ or - a few cents) for unleaded as Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Finland, Portugal, Norway and Denmark. All countries with a comparable standard of living.

Looking at the european countries that are substantially cheaper:

Greece, Spain, Baltic states - you simply don't earn the same amount of money there, so everything is always going to be relatively cheaper.

Of course only people in Swansea are unhappy about the fuel prices - everyone else LOVES paying so much - no wonder they can shaft us all the time - people just roll over and take it.

Considering I run diesel cars - from the chart you posted - the UK has the dearest diesel in the World - GREAT!!!

Yes there are a few small countries that charge as much for petrol as the UK - bigger countries usually charge less.European countries have always been known for high taxes - doesn't make it right - after all someone has to pay for the MEP's lifestyles.

Britain is really much closer to countries like the USA - Canada and Australia - compare our prices to theirs.

High fuel prices strangle economies - how much leisure boating would there be in the USA or Oz if they paid as much as we do???

Here you go, you'll be able to whinge about the cost of diesel as well now!
