Hd Dvd

Can anyone who is in the know confirm that HD DVD is region free. I have visited the forums covering HD DVD but I'm reading conflicting reports of the region encoding. Hopefully someone on here knows from their own trials.

I'm still unsure which route to go down though. HD DVD players are cheaper than the equivilant Blu Ray Players but Blu Ray seems to have the better films. I've had a look at the PS3 as a cheap player but it looks like a 1970's toy. All cheap shiny tacky looking plastic. Certainly not good looking as far as home cinema goes, and its rather large.

Ps3

Hi Biggles looking at a PS3 at the moment in front of me. I got one for the kids to play Blue Ray and games etc. I will not use it myself but the kids are delighted. It looks good as it is and is a nicer looking machine than previous ones.
DOnt know much more than that about it yet. The kids are playing a basket ball game onit and the speed and graphics are great.

Aidan,

I'm still sitting on the fence at the moment trying to decide which way to go. Got the big TV now just need something to pump through it. The PS3 does seem a sensible route if you have kids. Its an excuse to give the missus, anyway. And when the kids have gone to bed you can watch a movie on it. And price wise its cheaper than a Blu Ray player.

Life's never simple.

There are still loads of problems with compatibility as they were so late announcing the encryption standards - many items sold as HD ready weren't because they didn't know what standard was going to be used. Once again the MPAA were meddling with things they didn't understand.

Why did they bother with the encyption? Years in the making - cracked within a week of being released!!!

Hi Biggles, Its a nice piece of furniture or if you prefer, it looks well.
I have seen it both at 7xx Res HD and 10xx res Blueray (dont remember exact figs) and both look escellent.
It is fast and fires up immediately, I am going to get the SONY macthed HDMI as I am tired of trying to cross match equipment and messing around with Remotes.
Its hardly teh cheap way but I am worth it.
I dont like playing with these things probablyas I am no good. I gave up after space invaders got complicated and started getting designed by Kids.
You cannot record direct from TV with Sony at least not yet.

Have a look at it though, at least they delayed it past teh Christmas market cos it was not ready, thats a first for anyone exceet apple.
I am also looking forward to APPLE phone.

ps3 is a bargain blue ray player - it even supports 7.1 (cheapest blue ray that offers that)

I've seen it at £399 at www.play.com which is good. Does the basic package have all the bits and pieces to make it a fully fledged player.
I've noticed in the past with low end games machines you have to buy remote controls. Also they have been lacking some of the audio/visual outputs.

Guess if I wait a couple of months things will settle a little and I might recoup some of the money I spent on Sky HD which is due to drop in price soon.

Often wondered how those Channel island companies manage to beat mainland ones on price all the time.

Last time I looked it was 399 on www.play.com. This option is becoming a serious consideration. Blockbuster now hire out Blu Ray DVDs and they seem to have the better films. The Play one has the remote and a free HDMI lead.

The films here are £26.00 each which puts a downer on things..
also the quality is not good enough. I bought a gold HDMI cable to go into my Plasma, so it should be of the highest quality. It is slighty jaggy on the edges, not crisp or sharp, and over all a real let down..
I have watched dozens of films on Sky and most of them are superb.
Never mind.

It may just be something to do with the setup. I'm sure its worth persevering with.

Do you have a 1080 P TV or 1080 I. Maybe that makes a difference.

Unfortunately your one of the few with such a setup at the moment so your a bit on your own.

I'm waiting for my surround sound to be delivered this week then I'll look at either HD DVd or Blu ray.

By the way films should be cheaper from www.play.com

Regards Nick R.

If your telly is not true HD, i.e. 1080p your wasting your time with blue ray.
