The turbo lag was horrendous, but once it had spooled up it was really exciting. And with the permanent 4wd the progress you could make down twisty country lanes was unbelievable.

I was driven round goodwood race circuit by a friend in his Opel Monza. On a tight right hander just before the long straight the kickdown activated (it was an auto) and we went sideways at 70 mph.
I needed a change of clothing when we got back to the pits.

for fans of the Mk 1 Fiesta in all its guises !!!
this was me getting some air on the ranges at Otterburn in a 1300cc !
adding to my list - a Mk 1 XR2, an R5 GT Turbo - brilliant car but TWOC'd 4 times! in the end I gave up and got a Mini Metro City with a billy big button radio in it...could leave it unlocked and no one would take it.

Do you remember the long conveyer belt that carried the cars through the middle of the building?
I ran the gang of sub-contract valeter's that worked on there.
I suppose you could put the Alpine GTA in this group as well then
(Never owned but drove a few)

Had a few 'warm' hatches in my time. Escort XR3, MG Metro Turbo, Rover Metro Gti, Octavia L&K, Fiesta Zetec S, Ibiza FR and currently have a new Leon FR Coupé but if there's one car (not a hatch) from my past that I wish I'd never parted with it's the 1965 Buick Riviera 425ci Super Wildcat. The 7mpg would be a killer these days but the smiles per gallon ratio would more than compensate for it.

My only proper hot hatch was a Citroen BX GTI 16V in Red. Used to fly, but sold it after having hydraulic problems. The French electrics was also shocking with sensor lights flashing randomly on the dash.
Not sure if the next car falls in to the category of Hot Hatch but I did own a VW Scirocco MK1 it wasn't the GTI but a 1500 GL. It was the best handling car I've ever owned and just like the one below.....sexy!!

In 1989 Williams changed over to Renault engines.
I remember prepping a couple of Alpine GTA Le Mans for the launch party.
I think one was going to Massell. Ironically that was the year he signed for Ferrari....
I drove both of those GTA's

I had one of them at 18, was driving a Hillman Avenger 1.3 estate for 8months, took my driving test and 1 month later bought a white SD1 3.5 manual, PDD170R, my friends were driving Escort 1.1s, minis etc.
I also had 4 Fiat Uno turbo's over the years, last one I slightly modded and there wasn't a RS turbo or Renault 5 turbo in Plymouth that could catch it.

I had an XR2i before moving on to an Escort RS Turbo. I drove that from Surrey to north of Inverness early hours one Xmas eve in 6.5 hours, which included getting stopped for speeding on the M74 at 105mph

Alfasud 1.5.
Best over run exhaust note imaginable....and a bit of a tart-trap to boot.
Life was so simple back then. Friday = pay day. Fill car with enough go juice for the following week, head to the pub, kop off, drive home, lie-in, get up, repeat.
Monday back to work skint.
Simples.
Happy days.
