Mine wasn't quite so refined it was my first car bought from my current at the time girlfriends sister fella had been off the road for 1.5yrs took it to Halfords for MOT which failed and they quoted £2500 to get it to pass. I then spent the next 10 months getting it road legal myself and mate who was a mechanic needed new inner and outer sills, a panels, rear wheel arches, boot floor panel, petrol tank, full break system replacement. I'm not good with my hands but it turned out really well in the end but that was back when cars were straightforward and you could see an engine when you opened the bonnet.
It was lowered but by cutting the springs eek! Diamond White with the brown two tone stripe and the black plastic wheel arches and rubber boot spoiler! Embarrassed now to admit this but it also had blacked out windows ha ha

Awesome, the red top engine was half built by cosworth. Had one lowered, cut arches with obligatory 6x9s on the parcel shelf. Then got a GSi with the last of that engine before ecotecs.
First car was an ax gt. Lowered torsion bar, again with 6x9sTwin carb 85bhp, flew to 100 then ran out of puff, panels like rizzla paper, glad I never crashed. Happy days
Also had two golf 1.8ts chipped to 200bhp. One still going strong at 175k with the old man. One clutch and a water pump in 120k. VW reliability!

I was very lucky that my dad had done some Rallying in the 60's.
When the car started smoking a bit at only 50,000 miles we started looking for a recon engine - but then he remembered a little engine builder in North London - Vulcan Engineering. Needless to say there was some budget creep.
Hours spent poring over the Vulcan, Burton and other catalogues - remember the days before the internet?
Mine was going rusty in places when I sold it in 1993.

I cannot be 100% certain but I think WAR 530S is still around. Often seen rallying in and around Wales. Sponsored by Tenby rock shop. I will have a look through some photos.

Do you remember the yellow Vauxhall carlton they built and then gave it away with one years free insurance in a comp.
The kid that won it apparently crashed into a shop window soon after
