About 2" in Jersey. No problem for my front wheel drive hatchback. Stops a darn site quicker as well being lighter than most 4x4's.

Snow drifts up to 2ft up here, the wind has been bitterly strong past couple of days, horizontal blizzards. Was up in the fells yesterday, some drifts a good metre deep. General coverage of about 6'' at our level though.
Sedbergh, Cumbria. (We typically get much less than most 'cos we're in the rainshadow (snowshadow ) of the fells around.)

At Port Lympne zoo in Kent we have over 3 feet of it,,,, struggled to get in and feed animals today but hard core of keepers managed it. luckily we have landys but even those were getting stuck.I had the pleasure of lifting an icicle covered monkey into her nice warm shed! My ribs ok though all tucked up with the lions(almost!)

We had about a foot of snow this morning. My new Jeep got commandeered by a higher authority, so I've been tootling around in the Multipla with snow chains again.
Excellent toboganning today!

About a foot of snow here in Clanfield just North of Waterlooville.
I live at the bottom of a steep hill, which proved no problem at all for my D3 with General Tire ATs on.
Nasher.

Yes they are legal - they are not intended for use on tarmac - you put them on and off when the snow is on the ground, i,e. unploughed surfaces. This makes them a bit of pita to use regularly. In addition when you've got 2ft+ on the ground (as we do here) then ordinary cars get bogged down acting like a slow plow - great traction with the chains but basically driving into a wall of snow! However I certainly wouldn't have been happy making some of the journeys I have in the last week without a big shovel and the chains in the car.

Yeah thats what I thought - great in Scandinavia where the snow is thick and permanent throughout winter - all year - but not so great with the gritted -just - roads in this country.

If the roads have been cleared or gritted then you don't need them. Some winter tyres might help, but for most of the UK population there is probably no need. Snow chains are for crossing snow covered ground which has not been ploughed / gritted. You wouldn't drive with them on if you didn't need to as they are noisy, slow you down to about 30 mph max and vibrate on hard surfaces. Even up here where snow is relatively common (but not this much in Nov) so we are reasonably organised - the smaller roads are not cleared and treated.
Chains are standard issue in the Alps (compulsory in some areas/times).
I think you may be confusing chains and studded tyres which some Scandinavians will fit all year.
