Growing fruit at almost 55 North can be hit or miss. I had excellent cherries this year - bucket loads of them. The pear espaliers are doing well too - a few more warm days pls.

The second pic are the "fruit" of one of my crazier projects. The parent plant is only 13 years old, so no useful results yet. Any takers?

I do a bit of wild mushroom foraging, so a basket of chantrelles and some Donegal lamb with a purée of the above would be a nice "local" theme.

My old man had an ingenious device which consisted of a car screw jack set in an 'o' frame that pushed a wooden plunger about 2" thick down a very heavy bit of PVC pipe 'about 20 years ago' .. the pipe was drilled radially with holes to let the juice out onto a square stainless collector tray.

Personally I think he over crushed the pulp, because this thing could develop a mighty pressure .. is there an optimum amount of juice you want to extract ?

Yeah, approximately all of it would be ideal

Srsly tho, 70% of fruit weight is reckoned to be good

Picked these beauts on the pm dog walk, they're now sliced & drying under the log burner, they'll keep us in risotto for a few months

Ooooo... penny buns. One of the tastiest 'shrooms, managed to bag a basket of chantrelle today with a few brown ones too.

"String 'em up Dave!"

I used to work with a clatter of French lads. We raided high and low for a few seasons. I learned from pros - all names in French. We were lucky that we only found mushrooms round these parts Now I have a memory map and calendar of where to look. I even have a few GPS co-ords for special stuff - like a huge reliable patch of Trompette de Mort. I prefer Girolles, and if I can't get those, Chantrelles (our Grey Chantrelle).

I found what I think is a patch of Chantrelles today but they are BIG, 6-8" across, so I'm not sure enough to eat 'em. I've found Trompettes in France but never in the UK. We've got a good spot for Saffron Milk Caps about 200m from Pikey Towers as Maximus will testify to I also had a stonking beefsteak, polyphore today which we've just had stirfried with onion, garlic, chilli & a sliced rump steak, yum!

The mushroom pickers are out roaming the mountains around here looking under the Fir and Pine trees for the Pine Mushrooms -mitshutaki spelling ??
Today they get $6 a pound. The mushrooms are sent off to Japan.

We get the seconds as the buyers like the first class buttons .

We have Morel mushrooms all through our apple orchard some time of the year.
Also hear about finding the magic mushrooms growing in the old cow field.
