Internet security renewals- check

If anyone has an annual internet security software, in particular Norton. Check that you are not on auto renewal unless you want this.

Following advice I removed their products completely earlier this year and just found out that I was on auto renewal and they took money with no notification.

Its a constant ploy by them and also some web hosting companies, like 123-reg .. I had a big ding dong with them earlier this year about the fact they have no right to store my credit card details against my will, as I claimed they couild not be trusted to use them against my wishes.

It came to a head over a mailbox renewal, after which they assured me they were competant to keep my details, and not abuse them, and they would cancel the mailbox ... you can guess the rest .. 3 days later they charged me for the mailbox they had just cancelled ... idiots

Norton is bloatware, I cant stand it, it interferes with absolutely everything

That is why our web guys said remove it, it caused more grief and slowed the whole systems down.

Try Microsoft Security Essentials...it's free, written by the guys that wrote the OS , runs invisibly and we've not had any problems for the umpteen years we've used it across three pc's.

Course, you could get a Mac

Yep our guys installed it and removed Norton completely. I was amazed how much was hidden on the system

There was some bits I never got rid of. I don't think they ever did anything - positive or negative - but they just sat there and defied all efforts. Think it was a software writers f**k you tease

Norton is a total pain if you need a good virus prog free use avg just make sure to select the basic option during install.

Also if you can't uninstall some progs because they are resident or are being used by windows, reboot your pc and press F8 whilst it boots and then select safe mode (this stops programmes that run as services or in the background) you should be able to use device manger to uninstall stuff you couldn't before. Once all junk removed reboot as normal.

I had a similar experience with Mcafee, there were very good about the situation and refunded straight away.

I now have a MAC

No problems at all in 4 years
