I read different and it is well documented that as things get smaller, IE iPhone 5, they needed to ditch the 30 pin connector and go to something smaller so the lightening connecter was born. I am fine with the switch as both my iPhone and iPad use the same connecter. I did loose a couple of built in 30 pin connectors on radios...oh well.
I have one of the USB connectors for the iPad, but it is only for moving photos to the iPad, off my compact flash, from my DSLR.

I switched to a MacBook Air which I don't use that much anymore and an iPad. Never looked back, they just work. I use a PC at work and it doesn't always work. The only Apple product I think they haven't got right is the iPhone, the battery life makes it not usable as I can't get through the day. The iPad and Air batteries last longer than me and the devices are built reasonably solid.
An iPad cannot do everything a computer can do, you will discover the odd website or not having USB etc, but will get you 99% of the way and it so much easier than a computer once you get the hang of it, it will be the one you reach for almost always.

Smaller pin connector is far better. As others said (and as I have) the damn thing works just like it should
No adobe ? ... decent web designers have learned to make sites that dont use it .. including my paltry self cos most folk know its one of the best phones and tablet out there so you know your site is gonna be accessed by an apple device eventually .. its an adobe fail really not apple.
Some teccys moan about itunes .. yes its got faults .. but.. I plug 7 devices into one computer every 3 weeks or so and I havent had a mishap yet if you learn how to use it
Ive tried many of the latest smart phones. I get phone providers offering me deals left right and centre .. currently on one where 5 phones havent paid anything for 6 months and had a £2k kit budget for gear so I get to try stuff ... have to say ... The Iphone 4s and the 5 are the best out there ... especially if your not a teccy... refuse to buy a 5s cos the 64gb is £700 ive used samsung GS4 .. awesome display but full of crap stuff and not useable in one hand .. now ... re read that last bit .. seems crap but very important .. ITS A PHONE Smaller is less visable to VOSA
but the gen 3 ipad has retina display and is simply the dogzzzzzz

An important consideration for any device with access to the internet.

Still pissed that I can't get past 4gs and old pad unless I change all my dock stations, 2 motors, boat, workshop, lounge, office, kitchen, and I can't get my music back into iTunes on my new computer from my ipad, tried doing it from my iPhone and lost 2300 songs, so yes pissed the idiot at apple said it was a royalty thing, fecking funny it transferred the music I got though iTunes

This subject is always so subjective, it's not about which one is good/bad, it should be your choice as to which one ticks most of the box's as to how you are going to use it.
I may want my tablet to do different things, and use it in different circumstances, so my opinion would not assist you in your choice.
You need to do your own proper research.
Sorry
Steve

If your happy to sit as a browsing consumer on the sofa then either a cheap laptop or tablet will do .... I have a Lenovo laptop (work) and privately I bought a Samsung Note tablet for around £300,- which works well... but then again if your used to Apple buy an Ipad.....

Going on from this. I am looking at a tablet for use aboard RIBs/Boats.
I like the I pads and have found a waterproof and shockproof case as seen in images. Before I commit, do any others offer a similar waterproofing/shock proofing on other makes of tablets.
May develop these for use on Treasure Hunts aboard boats for clients,
so anyone other ideas of tablets? Waterproof bags are OK but are not strong

In my opinion the best tablets are iPad, iPad mini or Nexus7. I guess it will be fairly easy to get waterproof cases for all those as they are all very popular devices.
