J S off on an Osprey

About 4 years ago a 14 year old boy came on a level 2 with me, he showed great potential and went on to be an instructor. In the pub one night I remember telling him I wish I'd joined the merchant navy.

He's now at Warsash but leaving for Singapore next week to jump on the 270m British Osprey as a Junior Officer.

Good Luck James

I hope he enjoys what he is in for, he will have to enjoy his own company, isolation, crappy food, minimal shore leave, poor pay & not seeing land for weeks on end or being able to talk to an English speaking person for months on end.
Apart from that the merchant navy isnt too bad.
A view from the Irish Sea, SSE 55-70kn.

I met him on a PB2 course too....but he was the instructor!

All the best, many people in their middle or late aged lives with family and established UK based careers will look at what you are doing and be very jealous. It is unlikely you will get the chance to see the world at your leisure at any other time in your life after about age 30, so lap it up and make the most of it!! Have fun but be safe!

No doubt with modern technology, despite travelling the world, we wont even notice you are gone in this medium!

I know this can be a problem in the MN but these are some of the reasons why I chose to work for BP. Much of the fleet is manned by British Officers. The leave is very reasonable and the pay is good and tax free. I will let you know about the food. If you want to speak to people at home there is always on Broadband Internet and Sat phones.
