John Lennon's Island For Sale
After seeing the remote 19 acre Dorinis Island in Clew Bay advertised on a transatlantic in-flight magazine, the iconic singer bought it for £1,700 in 1967.
He obtained planning permission from Mayo County Council to build a house there for himself and Yoko Ono.
In the 1800s marine pilots, who guided ships into Westport harbour lived on the island with their families.Census figures show that over the years up to fifteen people lived there with the last recorded occupants in 1891.
Yoko Ono has said "We often discussed the idea of building a cottage there,it was so beautiful,so tranquil, yet so isolated,it seemed a perfect place to get away from it all."
Yoko Ono sold it in 1984 for $50,000 three years after Lennon’s death to a local farmer who still grazes sheep there, donating the money to charity.
Now,the island is being offered to a potential new owner for€300,000,45 years after the Beatles songwriter bought it.
Dorinish is made up of two small islands,Dorinish Beg and Dorinish Mor,joined by a natural storm beach causeway!
