Kango hammers and night workers.
I'm supposed to be working nights this week.Someone's using a kango hammer outside my front door at the moment and it's not going to stop for 2-3 days. He's removing the rendering from a house opposite.
Anyone know if there's anything I can do to stop him? I'm at the end of my tether at the moment and want to hurt him.

Tried that-its too loud to blank it out and it's an irregular noise which is what's keeping me awake.
I'm wondering if I can't get the HSE to stop him. He's using an ancient kango hammer without vibration damping and not wearing earplugs.
I doubt it'd work though

Try the council "noise pollution" they'll have someone round with a decibel meter asap and do they have planning etc you need it for most things now if its going to change the outside of the house?
If it's within 1m of an adjoining property I think you may be able to stop them with the party wall act for a couple of weeks

What did the contractor say when you approached him? Have you suggested an alternative time of working with your neighbour? What did they say? Do they know you’re on “nights” at the moment?

They know now and won't stop. Response was 'I'm just doin me job innit'.
The owner of the house doesn't live there-it's rented out and I don't know how to get hold of him.
Council will take 28 days

Been there many times - sorry to say you just have to put up with it. You can't expect other people to stop their lives just cos you or me work strange hours. Council are forever out strimming the grass etc at some ungodly hour.
Worst thing in the countryside is the dawn chorus - a shotgun would be very tempting - may work for the Kango as well.......

Well... He's stopped now.
I went outside to tell him to STFU again and told him in a very pleasant tone of voice that if he didn't reschedule I'd get the HSE down to check his kango hammer for acceptable vibration levels
While I was in the process of doing that I noticed the little pratt is working above an exposed gas meter and the pipe coming out of it is the size of a normal piece of copper water pipe.
He's DROPPING F**CKING GREAT LUMPS OF RUBBLE ON IT!
He's not even turned the gas off!
I've called the police-they in turn called the fire brigade.

Yes but as my dad used to say -
"There's plenty in the churchyard that would like to hear that!"

I thought the whole Idea of working nights was to spend all day in the Sun playing in your RIB. Oh and sleeping in your RIB

I wish- it's too late now and I'm not safe to be driving an artic down the motorway so I've had to call in as 'unfit'. They could hear the kango hammer going and were quite sympathetic at least but now I've got to work Saturday to make the money up.

That's very responsible and public spirited of you. If more truck drivers had your attitude, the roads would be a much safer . Would you have passed last week's Top Gear "tailgating" test?

if he starts up again I would call transco on 0800 111 999. They'll be there in an hour - and I suspect might have some stern words about the gas safety.
if you tell them you can smell gas - he will also have to shutdown his hammer until they spend ages sniffing around with their tested to decide its all in your head.

Didn't see it- but the front end of a tractor unit is quite soft (unless it hits a car).I like not being dead!
He's started again.
Transco are on the way

Agree with Polwart - get staight onto the Gas Emergency Service (no longer called Transco) and tell 'em you can smell gas from works being carried out next door.
As a bit of consolation, if he has been dropping bits of masonary onto the meter it is the type that will trip out if knocked (even gently - I handle the beasts with kid gloves) and the Gas Supplier will make a charge for visiting & re-setting it.
Also carrying out that sort of work in the vicinity of a live gas supply (the gas cock is still turned on) would interest the HSE (if you can get any joy out of them ) Just found a number - 0845 300 9923 - just tell 'em you are concerned about some building works being carried out in the immediate vicinity of a live gas installation.
