hi stedj
about 12k will get you a nice series two TD5 with the upgrated lights
es/gs model any lower will be series two square head lights 8 k is the top end 300TDI model range
what to watch out for
1.rear air cambers and pumps ASP
2.ABS faults
3. driver heated seat and heated screen
2. any thing that don,t work
full dealer history low miles a must
its a landrover its going to full to bits and cost the earth pic of my 2005 defender front seals after 6 thousand miles and its need a new water pump
that leaks as well
good luck
Dan TD5

IMHO you can't do better than turning Japanese - Toyota Land Cruiser with the 4.2 diesel - lovely!

Technically Japanese 4x4s are probably more reliable, will do higher mileages and give their owners an easy life. However, they aren't Landrovers and generally haev very little character which is what you get with a Landy

new shogun 3.2di auto
ads have you seen the new defender advert posters only. shows a speedo clock with millions of miles
must be a series three or early defender 200tdi

TD5 auto low miles - they are lovely to drive and VERY good offroad. They are pretty quick for a diesel but if you want more power they respond well to chipping.
They can suffer from gremlins but with some TLC will last forever.
Was talking to a bloke last week who uses a TD5 Defender to deliver boats all over Europe. He uses massive trailers and his last Defender did 165,000 miles in 2 years with no faults!!!

Defender heater IS crap but Discovery's isn't!!!
Mate of mine did Gap Road in all the snow in his new £400 RangeRover - it is obviously a wreck at that price but it rescued a lot of prepared other make 4x4s. I wish I could have made it!!!
The TD5 auto I had did Gap several times no probs!!!
And to prove it again - notice stuck quad - it is a lot steeper than itb looks!!!

Auto best but bit thirstier. V8 is ultimate but 16mpg - diesel about 26mpg (same as shogun).
TD5 is a 5 cylinder 2.5 turbo - think it's about 138bhp normally - 198bhp chipped. I found the standard one was reasonably quick - would cruise M4 100mph no probs - auto I had.

you only get 198 hp if you chip and include intercooler cx option
otherwise they chip to 160-170 ish

Yes my 300tdi is totally mint - just put a towhitch on it - so clean underneath it looks 2 yrs old not 8!!!
Got to be honest the 300tdi engine is great offroad but not as refined as the TD5 onroad.
If mine was a V8 though I don't think you could tell the difference between it and the newer shape vehicle.

The Discovery appreciation gang make me smile. It always goes " Discoverys are great, but........." then you get a list of all the stuff that breaks or falls off. Is this not a bit of a contradiction? Are we not confusing poor quality and unreliability with "Character" and "Fun"?
