Insurance ain't that bad, mine was about £300 on a classic policy with modifications. Best thing you could do is stick it through an MOT and see what crops up.

I think the disco's get bad press for no good reason.

Very capable, and affordable 4x4's, which cross over into car teriotary too. Nice comfy motors on the motorway, still pull whatever whereever.

Granted its 25mpg no matter which way you look at it, but it IS a 2ton car with a little luxury.

My TD5 is less than £400 a year to insure. Against what everyone says, the air suspension is excellent, and the vehicle as a whole is reliable and in my eyes not expensive to run when you look at what you get.

Here she is!

Today I blew up 3 flat tyres and used a charger to start her up as the battery was flat. Had a drive off road as it's currently sorn and everything seemed ok.

After taking the pictures I got the jet wash out and gave her a blast and now she's looking good.

Apparently there's some bits in the garage, a brand new set of side steps, enough parts to do a full service and a dog guard.

Unfortunately my dad has cancer and he's too ill to help out but apparently it made him smile when she fired up first time this morning.

Looking at the mileage it's done 198K so it's probably just about run in and as this was my dad's pride and joy I think I have just found my next project

Get a gallon or 2 of Waxoyl under it, and make sure you swill all that salty stuff of it when you've been in't sea. I've had 2 Disco's over the last 15 years. Love em.

Best of luck to your dad.

Check when the timing belt was last done? On most TDi engines they're good for 60-80k or 4-5 years. Should be changed along with the tensioner, thermostat, water-pump, etc.

Other long-term maintenance can include draining and refilling transmission and rear diff, especially if you want to maintain it for the next few years.

Right, get those on e bay and sold. Buy a new battery because its just not worth the risk and then as suggested waxoyl the lot including under the battery which can corrode.

Had two discos, superb bits of kit for ribbing. Manual did 29mg driven carefully towing, auto did 26 mpg carefully towing. When Viv drove it the fuel figures dropped by 1/3rd

Can't see what the tyres are like, but BF Goodrich All Terrains transformed the vehicle on the slipway and we never had a problem again even with a 2.5 tonne Pacific on rough ground.

The price has dropped and they are quite cheap now, so don't spend mega bucks on it, just thick paint to tart it up.

Oh and don't sell it to Rogue Wave, he tortures them by taking them swimming, salt stains up to the window level.

Pete

Check the earth lead off the battery where it bolts to the chassis, I had poor starting in the cold, cleaned the earth up and it was fine after that.

Very oddly I can see it now. I ran Spybot S&D and all of a sudden it worked, though it didn't pick up anything.

Spooky! May be we are being spied on by another forum

Got a little Disco time in today and dug out the polisher and G6 that I bought for the SR4 project a year or so ago, after a quick test polish it started to come up ok.

I really need to have a good look in the day light and go through all the points you guys have raised

You've started something there. I've used Menzerna 203s with rotary polisher with good results. Finish with Collonite for uber-gloss and protection.
