Land Rover Lump
Hi I have a Land Rover which has a standard Land Rover 2.25 diesel
and I would like to swap out the Land Rover engine for a trooper 2.8 lump.
has anybody got any experience of converting a Land Rover in this way

Rogue, Can't help with the transplant, but can say have had the 2.8 lump, Built like a Brick outhouse, bullet proof with loads of low down "GRUNT" fab motor. Good luck with the Transplant.
Brian
PS vauxhall proved cheaper for bits, twas used in the Frontera.

Thanks Brian. i had trooper in fact still got it and i love the engine unfortunately the rest of it disolved on the slipway. I've got qute a cool Landie (c reg) but it's a built gutless.
So if it can happen I'd be happy. IT was nice to see some Landie ads down the bottom for a wee while also!

I think the first step would be to uproot the current engine!

Rougue
You need to speak to these people first.
www.engineconversions.co.uk/landrover.html
They do the adaptors etc.
Excelent kits. I used one in my 2a - V8 conversion.

I believe a favoured engine to pop in the Landie is the Daihatsu Fourtrak 2.8TD.
Check out http://www.difflock.com/cgi-bin/discus/discus.cgi for possible help.

Your 2.5TD (not 2.25) landrover is a piece of high quality engineering that has been carefully balanced to provide excellent road holding in addition to being the best off road vehicle, and now you want to put a tractor engine in it.
You might find the additional weight requires new springs + HD shocks and what about the additional torque going to do to 18 year old gearbox and axles ? Thought about what is going to happen to the power steering ?
If it works leave it alone.

Jono, I think we need to arrange for an ex-communication, perhaps The Honourable High Priest Garfish could preside over such a ceremony. Nothing too dramatic, just a bit of blood letting and purging should do nicely

Thanks Jono I was hoping you'd bring your engineering skills to the thread!. I could always put a 2.5 TDI 200 in to the Landie.
hey Jono how big is your winch!
IT hasn't got power stering by the way, but will soon have cos I am getting old and feeble

How many gears does the landie box have? TDI engine won't fit to a four speed but will fit some of the 5 speed boxes, depending which one you have.
You need to have a chat to Ben at Drovercare in Winchester.

Well at least some of the gears work.
If the performance is a little lacking there are some other options you could try. Emptying the 3.7 L yamaha engine & bits / junk out of the boot would reduce the weight considerably. Removing the roof rack would also reduce the weight and help the aero dynamics. A full service including new air filter and valve clearances will definately give it back the umph it needs.
