Land Rovers

I'm thinking about buying another Land Rover for towing Distant Rumble plus I always regretted selling my SIII Stage 1 V8. I'm looking at an 84 110 V8 with 140K on it, engine has been replaced with a RR 3.9 efi, it's 4 speed manual with overdrive, and the chassis is sound. What sort of price should I expect to pay?

Come on then lofty, what are these things worth? It's a normal hard top (rather than the station wagon jobbie with seats in the back) but does have side windows. Is 1200 quid a fair price?

The bulkhead is probably getting a bit tatty. Check for rust outboard of the fresh air vents. Also get a screwdriver and take out the drivers side speaker (if it has such luxuries) by the drivers right knee. You will probably be able to see the engine from there. If you cant, buy it. If you can, knock him down £200-300, and buy it. Mumbling about rotten fruit helps here.

Engine wise, take off the oil filler and look inside the rocker cover with a torch.
The colour will tell you what the engine is like. Black treacle - walk away, black but clean - walk away slowly, dark brown - don't drive it far without RAC/AA Recovery, Strong tea - should be OK for another 30,000 miles. Anything lighter than tea - the engine has been replaced in the last 50k and well maintained.

Ta for that. I'm pretty happy I could fix anything that's broke, I'm just not sure what they're worth these days, I stopped paying attention when I sold the last one.

Mat, how much does DR weight ? you must be close to the practical limit if not over the top. Yes I know they say 3500 kgs in the book but a number of people have had close shaves towing big boats of late. Swopping ends at sea is scary doing it on the M3 oooh noooo.

The reason for this is I spent this afternoon searching e bay (quiet day in the office and on Ribnet) so looking at commerical trucks. There were some cheap ones which might prove better at towing.

Used to have an 84 110 v8, was a nice truck until I put a Nissan 2.8 in it. £1200 doesn't sound a bad price if the rear chassis, hangers and bulk head are sound.

Yeh, you're right. One reason why I want a 110 V8 (rather than SIII or 90, diesel, etc) Commercial stuff might be better, but a LR I can reasonably leave on the street here, not sure about a tatty old lorry though. Oh well, we'll see how things pan out. Perhaps a 101 FC, but they're far more expensive than I'm prepared to pay, and even less practical.

get an old rangie, it'd be just as cheap, and a billion times more acceptable ride/comfort wise. The heater and ventilation will work, as will the wipers.

It always works, through the door seals, the floor, the roof (added benefit of a shower), round the screen, infact everywhere but the heating system.

JF has a point about a Rangy, but you will find it hard to get a sound one for £1200. If you go that way, look for a '91-'93 Vouge SE.

Mat, be aware that the 110 V8 has the HD Salisbury axle on it which the range rover doesn't becuase it was built for work. Also I think the gearing is lower and the country version has self levelling suspension which could be useful.

That overdrive isn't standard, the four speed box in a 110 V8 was good for 90 - 95 (difficult to read the speedo at that speed) but could be useful.

Still think your to close to the towing limit. Old spice is 2000kgs plus about 750 for the trailer. Thats about as much as I want to tow.

Slight change of direction....
Is there a web site that gives land rover defender 2nd hand price guides? I can find one for cars etc but not Hard top Defenders.
I am looking at a 1999 Treg, TD5 Hard Top with county pack, 39k miles FLRSH. What's it worth???
