Ta for help, most of D drive was back up files done auto weekly so removed most and now have 5 gb free

probably not the best place to keep your backups - what happens if the laptop is stolen, lost in a fire, or the hard disk completely fails (I am guessing you have a single physical disk that is partitioned into 2). Or even if the C drive fails (or the screen/motherboard etc) and you really need a file NOW then it will be a PITA wheras with an external backup its just an inconvenience.

If the lap top is mostly used for internet browsing, there's probably little need to back up so regularly.

As noted above, you should always back up to a remote device - the one I pointed you to at Amazon is a good solution and can be used for backing up other computers you have too.
