My personal connections are more WW2, but nevertheless:
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them."

Surprised how few of my neighbours are observing the candle lighting. I shall have a stern word with the disrespectful t***s tomorrow, particularly the German next door.

Lights out at 10pm.
My great grandad age 40 & his only son age 20 were both killed in the great war both within a year of each other decimating the family business.
A wealthy neighbour who's wife was German , had when they moved into their mansion before the war had carved into the wooden beams of the house German sayings ,poetry , odes ect ,
Our local parish council though this was in bad taste & had them all chiselled off .
Another gt uncle of mine was captured & held prisoner by the germans in ww1 even though he had it rough on short rations as a prisoner in Germany things were even worse when he returned back to England as the government put all returning pows back into camps back in England in as bad or worse conditions for a few months or so , conditions were that bad his mother sent him beef & pork dripping tea cakes ( Baps if your a southerner ) through the post twice a week as he was starving .

My great aunt drove and maintained ambulances in France. Her brothers were in the Navy. They were lucky, they all survived.

Just the thought of sending my 19yo lad off to that, puts a lump in my throat.

Sure enough!..And after early 1916 there was'nt even a Choice.
We lost both Great Grandfathers and one Great Uncle in the first. But faired a bit better in 2nd,although not all wounds are clearly visible.
I must say the tribute in the Moat at the Tower of London, with a Ceramic Poppy to represent each and every British and Commonwealth Casualty is immensely powerful and very poignant!
