OK, Stuart, you got me, I will rise to this.
At the time, I thought that Mark Cueto's foot might have been on the line but on further review, I have to say that I thought video referee got this wrong.
The only camera angle that is conclusive is the one from behind looking directly along the touchline. The french touchjudge does not raise his flag and is standing on the tryline (!!!!) and Alain Bolland asks the correct question " Is there any reason why I CANNOT award the try?"
Cueto's foot did not clearly break the line and if his foot is in the air, he is deemed to be still in play. The answer therefore should be "No"
As in cricket, when the benefit of the doubt goes to the batsman, so in rugby the team crossing the line should be deemed to have scored unless there is sufficient evidence to suggest otherwise. On this occasion, that evidence was lacking in my opinion (as an expom who for some strange reason still wants to support England!)

Pity about the try. In the spirit of things where there was so much dispute about photos and camera angles, surely the try was simply good rugby & should have been awarded.
Knocked the soul out of the game.
Two great sides on the night. No losers in fact.

Somebody has just brought this to my attention on another site.....
Ian Robertson of the BBC reports this morning that: On the night it took 3 minutes to get a decision because Dickinson could only get 2 (of 8) video slo-mo’s from the French audio-visual technicians (apparently due to partly language difficulties) – there were 8 cameras which had images.
On the two pieces of evidence that Dickinson had, he ruled that from one of the images Cueto’s foot had touched the line – there is no definite proof that his foot is in contact with the line (it is either touching or is just above the line, impossible to be certain). It certainly is not touching the split second afterwards when the ball is touched down. Still images are still not definitive about foot touching line (or just above/shadow – impossible to tell)
The touch judge clearly didn’t put his flag up so was also not sure whether his foot had touched the line (irrelevant of grounding).
BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT; Given that there was doubt about whether his foot had touched the line or not – perhaps Dickinson should have ruled try, but in Rugby Union there is no law, concerning foot in touch, which allows benefit of the doubt to either the ball carrying side or other team. There are benefit of the doubt rulings regarding grounding by player in goal (attacking v defending, ETC). In Rugby League there are laws about benefit of the doubt, see http://wwos.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=307912

I was in Paris and what an atmosphere! The disallowing of that try I think cost us the game.
Time for a benefit of the doubt to the attacking side rule in Union IMO.
