There's some good boat names popping up!

It's an XDA - GSM phone and "pocket Windows" PDA combined. A fugly thing, and a tad large compared to most modern phones, but well handy!
Browsing web sites on a small screen takes some getting used to. Itis a bit like looking at your PC through a loo roll

I regularly use my mobile and laptop to surf when I'm away working, in fact I am now,in a marquee, in hastings. It's a bit slow tho' 11.7kbps! not quite the 512 i'm used to, but when there's nothing else available it's a godsend.
regular compaq laptop + nokia 6310 mobile (built in modem) connected via infra-red, brill!

Don't know what speed I can actually get with the XDA. Its GPRS, but they seem to be a bit cagey about how fast it will actually go -- most of the blurb just refers to "high speed"!. Seems OK though
JF what are you doing in a marwuee in Hastings (apart from catchnig up with theRIBnet forums of course)?

I am able to get 28,800bps with the laptop plugged into the mobile phone most of the time. When you're on the train it's a bit dodgy, tunnels being the worst for some odd reason
I use the mobile bit for working on servers etc.. from away which is dead handy, although I'm sure there is a bit of posing in that too
But yeah, if you have the latest drivers in for the 6310i, and a strong signal, it should work pretty well - it beats my last 6210 phone.
One of my thoughts was to take the webcam out with the laptop on the boat with the mobile, but I'm not sure if the laptop could handle being on the rib - maybe one of them picture phones would do.....

John,
I was in Hastings doing a conference/party for Barclays bank, I look after the video projection, sound, lighting ect in the conference industry (not all at once. LOL)
If you're using GPRS, it's sposed to run at about 40k I think, pretty comparable with a regular dial-up 56k modem, as they never seem to quite get to 56.
I looked at GPRS, but it's charged by the amount of data traffic, not time, orange wanted £15 a month for up to 8 meg of traffic with further charges thereafter! that could get dear I thought!
I use a regular dial-up via infra-red and the 6310's built-in modem,
the 0845 number falls within my 1000 mins inclusive tarriff, 1000 mins, any time, any other mob network, any landline. it's an O2 tarriff, O2 max I think it's called, orange match it under thier "orange value promise" (£75 a month) so it's a little slow, but I don't mind, as it's cheap Issac!

Mugshots stuff not done yet, had exams and revision taking up most of my time. Database layout is sorted, and the basic design is sorted, just a case of implementing the thing. Last exam is tuesday morning, so then I'm free to work on this.
