Members Profiles
John
How about adding "Boat Name" to members profiles? Then we could tell each other by our boats rather than our Nicknames - it might be an easy way to put a name to a face!

I would still like to see a Passport like photo of boat and of humanoid in the profile so that one might recognise and then meet and greet or avoid like the plague, depending.

Martin - Yes good idea as a "workaround" - but having it as an option would prompt people to add it!
Benjamin - How long is a "Pilchard"? - 5.85m....... But what is your boat called
Sounds like your boat is more or less the same set up as mine! - any pictures?

Members Photo's
Hi Brian,
Well now that I have plenty of photo's taken of me on various craft, do you reallly want a mug shot of me on the net??????
Would Mr J.K. have to ammend the web page to allow us to add a picture on our profile?
I don't mind as it dose help to put names to people & boat recognition when out on the water.
regards
Kevin
PS I am glad the motley drinking crew survived another w/end of merryment Keep trying Daniel!!!

Not wanting to be a damp squib but I don't think "vBulletin" which is the software running the forum supports photo's on user profiles.
I suspect that the only way to do it is for JK to create another section "Titled" User Profiles where we can add stuff about ourselves or we just add one into new/current thread.
Cheers Mark

The actual forum scripts would need modifying to display an image in the user profiles. Can't imagine it being particularly tricky to do as vBulletin uses PHP which isn't too complex. I'd have a look myself, but I don't have access to the vBulletin scripts.
Matt
EDIT: Just realised, surely vBulletin supports avatars? In which case, allow users to use custom avatars.

VBulletin does have this facility, but I've got it turned off.
Images in the user profile, known as "avatars", tend to be used for cartoon characters rather than pictures of the individual. I don't like them as they just add visual clutter and serve no purpose -- others clearly think they are the best thing since sliced bread!
Jon Fuller's BoatMad forums have avatars enabled and they seem to be quite popular. Have a look and see what you think -- they could do with some more visitors anyway
If I enable avatars on RIBnet there is no easy way of controlling what pictures people use, so it wouldn't neccessarily have the result that people are asking for. Another option would be for someone to maintain a web page with members pictures -- I would be happy to provide server space for this, but don't have time to administer it.
What do you reckon?
John

John, IMHO it's fine the way it is. Avatars, like flags on RIBS, are a hassle.

John, if you want, I'll administer it. Can easily knock up some PHP scripts to control the whole thing, allow people to upload an image and then wait for it to be given the green light by a moderator, at which point it would enable it on the actual page itself.

Jools,
Herewith a rather uninspiring photo of my 'baby' at Bembridge before I bought her - it's the only one I've got!
We have just had a fantastic few days around the Solent with her.
What speed do you get from Panther? - I recorded 32 kts at 5700 rpm with two adults and 2 children aboard + approx. 75l of fuel (GPS Reading at slack water). This was a little disappointing, as I had expected 35 kts + before I bought her.

With a bit of luck, a test version of the mugshots stuff will be up later tonight for people to have a play with, so get some jpegs of yourselves sorted out, and then some jpegs of your boats too!
Ta,
Matt
