Scary stuff - boat found drifting off Australia - table laid - computers running - engine running - no crew!!!

They are starting a search as there is no liferaft on board but they don't even know if it had one - all other safety gear still on the boat. Shredded sail but no other damage.

An update...

Officials have called off the search without finding any traces of the men. Estimated more than 6 days in the water gives no chance of survival. However, family have started a private search.

Speculation is that they fell overboard in rough weather, soon after leaving their port. Maybe you just can't be too careful...

That doesn't sound right. How can the table be laid with food still if the weather was that bad?

That's what I can't work out - and a laptop was left running. Having said that the sail was shredded but no attempts were made to put lifejackets on - surely an obvious step if the weather gets really bad???

Bit more news:-

It does make sense. The jib could have shredded itself just from flapping like that for days.

Could even be Pirates as Biggles said but they were still some way from Papua New guinea.

Could be a really weird explanation but usually the simple ones are the most likel. Nice sunny day - one of them not paying much attention and falls in - others try to rescue him and fall as well. They say the engine was running but no mention of in gear or not.

given there ages, I would say one or two fell in or was swimming , and the other 1 or 2 fell in trying to help recover the other. Laptop on and table was set because they went outside without storing these items because it was an emergency , and they started the engine to aid the recovery........anyway the 3 guys ended up in the soup, and the boat sailer off on its own , probably a few 100 yards out of reach until exhaustion set in and they Died one by one , as they tried to swim after it. Very Sad .....

I don't think it was pirates , as they operate in the commercial world , and wouldn't leave behind valuable things ...... hostages are hard to keep and maintain, and everyone is going to be looking for them, and they might not be worth the 100k you want for them. it would be easer to kill the men, strip the boat and sink it, especially if its in a remote part of the world as it could be up to 2 weeks before they send a search party , and even then they could be in the wrong place, and you would be long gone , with no witnesses , and no evidence pointing at you , except the goods to be sold in some black market in some doggy country.......

hhmmm, Have I missed my true calling in Life ?????? maybe i could get a part in pirates of the Caribbean ???

Ahh it mentions it WAS in neutral - they must have been trying to recover a MOB - the report mentions a freak wave - doubt it unless that's what caused the MOB in the first place.

A very sad incident all the same.

Hi Codders, I read one article that mentioned that the boat was not in gear.
No such thing as magic lads! However it can be difficult to swim after boat blowing away downwind if all immersed in water.

Say one falls in, two other go to help lift back over side, boat turns side to wave, freak wave, all in water, winds blows downwind slightly faster than all can swim, no jackets, History!

at the end of the day, what ever happened it must have been a terrifying situation/incident and my thoughts go to their friends and family, as there must be many questions that will remain unanswered forever,
also goes to show that you will never win against our unpredictable climate, and whether you find your fun in aviation or marine,, the weather must be respected, very sad story,
