A hell of a lot depends on driver skill - in Africa I have seen people drive old Ladas and Pug 504 estates through areas where other people have got 4x4s stuck!!!
I do know one thing though - I took that Discovery along Gap Road in the Brecon Beacons no problem at all - NONE of my mates with their Jap stuff would risk it - I didn't ding the underside even once!!! My mate tried to drive his Toyota Amazon along the Roman Road and grounded it before he had gone 10 feet - there is a nasty drop off the main road onto it!!!

blimey, have we found something you cant do or don't know how to do, like view a simple stream, hehe ;-)
come on everybody, send codders some streaming vids of interesting stuff we can chat about but he cant seee........
no cant change my view, if someone said they would swap me landy for there equally well appointed amazon i would bite their arm off...
come to think of it i have owned quite a few toyotas and not one of them has ever had a problem or fault, hmmmmm

Maybe not too far from the truth
But we did get around a lot faster than the Landys!

IMHO that says more about the driver than the vehicle
OK remember that I've got no axe to grind here, but here's what I saw in the video:
Shogun/Pajero goes down track, driver seems to know what he's doing, and all goes OK.
Landrover swb goes down after the Mitsi, and gets stuck.... BUT... if you look at the wheels, in the early shots you can see that the Landy's offside wheel is spinning whilst the inside one isn't, and in the later shots, the front wheel is spinning whilst the rear is stationary. Looks like it's in 2-wd drive with no diff lock? Now I'm not a 4x4 expert, but weren't old LR 90's manual 4-wd selection with manual axle lock?
Nasty "kerpling!" at the end though!

Richard, I reckon your spot on. My thoughts were that that series 3 was in 2wd only.

I was just surprised that the front wheel was spinning - I assumed that the default was rear-wheel drive?

so perhaps the 'Kerpling' was a shattered rear diff?

Or maybe the rear had already gone
Only the driver/owner knows!
Anyway, having had a look at the other videos, the off-road videos shot inside the Pajero make it look very easy. I've only been extreme off-road a couple of times, once was on the circuit at the Motor Heritage Museum at Gaydon in Warwickshire. Their Disco squeaked and rattled, sounded like the suspension was about to fail in a very spectacular way! In contrast, the Pajero on those videos is very quiet and the driver very relaxed listening to the radio ("The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and "Show Me The Way To Amarillo"?)

Could it be that old Landy reliable Gearbox failure, transfeer box failed so it could never go into 4wd, or did the driver reach for the selector stick but his hand dissapeared tro one of the large rust holes in the floor
I think Landys are buckets of rust, worse than any SUV with all the oil they leak, gutless, old fashioned, poorly engineered and inherrent with design faults and on their bad side
Landys are old hat, run a flawed TD5 motor with know defects, and recall issues , uncomfortable to drive, poorly finished and uneconomical
You dont see Landys in Dakar, they are not up to it,
Landy electronics is like comparing the graphics on a Sinclair zx Spectrum with say an l200 post 2002 akin to a ps2 consoles graphics.
Defenders for farmers
Freelanders for moms dropping the kids to school
Discoverys for wanabee 4x4 enthausists
L200 s for towing diggers, large ribs, huge trailers and servicing antennas on top of mountains
