PC monitor resolutions

My monitor packed up yesterday. It's a 20" with a native resolution of 1600x1200. I went to go and buy another one and after visiting 4 shops including PC world,I can't find anything with a native res of more than 1900x1080 and they are all widescreen. It's a significant and noticeable drop in clarity while gaming.

Why is nowhere selling decent res monitors? Any ideas? I've had to buy a 16x12 monitor from Amazon and there was hardly any choice even there.

I've got one coming I'm just puzzled as to why everywhere with an actual storefront doesn't stock anything except for the inferior widescreen models.

If I wanted an HD TV I'd buy one,but I don't-I wanted a monitor. Traditionally they are way better res than HDTVs-so why sell monitors that are no better than TVs?

I think that's the problem. The mainstream shops supply Mr Joe Average who really doesn't have a clue about resolutions but looks for the HD tag and thinks that's the latest must have. I guess the manufacturers are happy 'cos they can mass produce a standard LCD panel for both Tv and monitor.

Fair comment-I was wondering if it was something to do with 3D being the new 'in' thing but what you say makes far more sense.

I hate widescreen and apart from watching DVDs which I don't do, there isn't a single reason I can think of that makes widescreen better than the old format.
