Petrol Strikes ....

I went out this afternoon and used most of my boat fuel up on principle. Had an encounter with 9 dolphin off old Harry. Great weather, great afternoon came back and queued at a petrol garage to buy a pint of milk....... You should have seen the faces of people, priceless.. Made me laugh for ages.

Just read that. Decanting petrol for her daughter IN THE KITCHEN??

So, from that we can take it that: Petrol + cooker (on) = fire.

I was filling up in Newport (Wales) today and some guy turned up at a pump carrying a 5L petrol can and the queue nearly lynched him They were shouting about him panic buying and he was shouting back that he had ran out of fuel around the corner, the forecourt attendant stood next to him while he filled the can up

I think we need a ministry of common sense.

I think the drivers of these tankers must be laughing all the way to the bank. Their union tried to tell us it was not over money but safety and longer hours. Now all the drivers have been told they can work longer hours ( so much for their worries on safety)

I think that unless you know the full story you should keep your misinformed rant to yourself and accept that you don't know enough about the subject to voice an opinion.

Having had colleagues verbally abused by idiotic passers with exactly your attitude today while dealing with large volumes of flammable chemicals today I'm not in the mood for this.

Incidentally, I'm a tanker driver and I'm NOT going on strike.Neither are any of my colleagues.
I do however know why the Hoyer/Wincanton/DHL etc drivers are threatening to strike and given the extremely dangerous nature of their job and the piss poor way their pension funds are being messed around, I really don't blame them.

Trouble is public support for any industrial action is nil. The whole country has problems and unfortunately this latest issue has created bad feeling towards your colleagues. This is not personal but if those who deside to strike follow up with action more people will suffer and as my business operates with fuel use I will have a rant. Note the heavy response on this forum alone. As I said not personal

Fair comment.

However, as the union says (and no, I'm not a union member) it really isn't about the money.Wages aren't being negotiated. It's about not having knackered drivers driving 40,000 litre petrol bombs around the road network and the resultant loss of life that an accident can cause. Being 'told you can work longer hours' doesn't make it any safer. It's a demanding job where one slip will cause untold damage to lives and property.

The thing about reaching a level of training and professionalism in a job where destroying half an industrial estate doesn't usually happen is that people assume that it's not dangerous.


We don't kill half a coachload of kids because we were stupid enough to be messing around with a dvd while driving.
I doubt very much that 'poor bus drivers,they're just bluddy glad to have a job' is much comfort to those who had to ID their children or the surviving children who saw their dead friends.

But then, fuel tankers aren't allowed INTO tunnels in the 1st place.

You can shout it in any colour you like, but as pensions are being discussed, I'll have to assume that it's a little bit about the money.

I have to agree with Ian . In todays world even mentioning a strike is wrong. Everyone works very hard and if they dont like it they can look for other jobs ?

It is about money - 'better working standards' is just PC speak for it. Final salary pensions for example wentout the window years ago for most of the country .

From unites own document ;

cut pay by 20%, which is a drop of
about £9,000-9,500
– replace the 4 week redundancy
package with inferior statutory
provision.
– replace the sickness schemes with
inferior statutory provision.
– close final salary pension to 70
workers presently in it, moving
them to the inferior money
purchase scheme.

For me this is just the industry modernising the same as the rest of the country ...all driven by market forces ...the same as the rest of business in the UK .

I'm not saying drivers dont work bloody hard ....but we all do .....
