As far as I am aware the company that you link to stole the design by taking an illegal copy of an existing Phantom. That would probably help keep costs down. You could just go and steal someone's boat which would be even cheaper still . . .

John

Interesting to read the link on PB racing though and see that one team has chosen STEYR diesel engines......

" In a major new development, Team ORTM has announced that it is partnering with Steyr Motors, the Austria-based marine diesel specialists from the Steyr-Daimler-Puch group of companies, in an engine supply deal. This deal will see Team ORTM racing with inboard Steyr MO256H45 engines (shown on the left) for the 2005 season. "

Possibly, but if this is the case somone had to take action against them. So far they advertise this boat as theirs, race it in International powerboat races and no one is chacing them.

I'm not saying if they did what you calim to have done is right, what I'm saying is that may be this is not the case and may be the moulds were bought by them and improved a little bit in fact

I'm asking I do not know Jono. I'm not an EXZPERT
These guys in Malta seem to think that they paid for the moulds.
As I said if there was anything illegal about these moulds wouldn't they have/had someone from somewhere going against them in a big way?

I very much doubt they are the only ones to have done this - there seems to be some question as regards the parentage of many Rib hulls......

It also reminds me of a story I heard a few years ago - a company hiring out exotic cars had to give a Ferrari a respray as it had been hired with false details and when it came back there were bits of fibreglass stuck all over the body shell!!!

On "Splashing" in general....

Isn't the case that since many boats - RIB or Hardboat are built by small operations that people can get away with splashing or copying someones hull simply by virtue of the fact that its too difficult/expensive for the original builder/designer to take legal action? Throw in the complications of cross border legality and one assumes that the Phantom chap (Steve Baker?) is unlikely to sue to bloke in Malta as the chances of success / possible return in compensation would make it not worth it?

Presumably in one were to splash a Genmar hull from say a Glastron, then hordes of corporate lawyers would descend rapidly?

...and since this thread is about phantoms does any one know where I can find a REAL Phantom hull for sale 23 or 25? I pay up to Euro 10,000 for it depending on condition.

Thanks

They often come up on ebay - also http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk

Usually the complete boat though - dirt cheap as well sometimes!

Ohh Dirk you are such a stickler for quality, surely ordinary unleaded would do! Or as the super unleaded got more active ingredients like Arsonic!
