Brian,

I'm not quite sure where you thought there were options? I'd assume M6->M74, then (and there are various options here which are all about the same) M73 > A80 > M80 > M9 to Perth. Then A9 > Inverness - then west from there.

does that help - or did you see an alternative?

Wot he said...............

The only bit thats slightly narrow and twisty is the bit either through Inverness and along the south of the firth to Beauly or from the dual carriageway from north of Inverness coming south into Beauly.
Its ony a few miles so shouldn't be too bad if you take it easy and avoid Inverness in the busy periods during the week.
Its a few miles further north that its starts to get "interesting" towing anything of reasonable size

Yep, Wot Pol said.

Could this be a good point to start reccommending "refuelling stops"?

I'll start with a stonker of an Indian which is a 2 minute diversion off the A9 (it's on the old A9, so not really a diversion at all!) If you want a really good curry (sit in or take away) divert through Dunblane on the B8033, as you drive into the town the old road was a dual carriageway, now a "normal" road with parking places in what was the inside lane. If you pull in somewhere past the police station (about 100 yds after the traffic lights) there's lots of nice easy trailer friendly parking and the restaurant is at the next roundabout (<100 yds after the police station)

Also used to be a good chip shop in Auchterarder, but it's been a while since I used it so may or may not still be there.....

I should add the usual disclaimer about being nothing more than a (very) happy customer.

I could give you the most 'fun' route! Along the side of Loch Ness and then up to Abriachan and on to Beauly that way. Keeker of a hill up the side of Loch ness to Abriachan!

I towed a 4m boat up there - and wouldn't have done that if I had known what I was doing!

That used to be our regular route to the North West before the A9 came into being sensible..... Ballyhellish, Fort William, Fort Augustus, Beuly etc

I once drove back down the 'old' way as a scenic change from the A9 and ... I dont know hold the old boys did it ?, hardly any overtaking spots, and forget everything, if you are towing ... and copy that if there are a lot of tourists on the road .. you could be looking at 20mph to 30 mph for 40 miles at a time OMG! its a stinker

Thats the way north for me when I go to Orkney, I certainly wouldn't tow the boat up and down it

That's how you define a decent distillery Tour. You leave "happy"

I once had the pleasure of a visit to Strathisla where there were lots of North Americans haverin' aboot Chivas Whatever. Anyway, the Wee Mon in charge of the bottles noticed my reticence and asked me would I like to try the (large, untouched,) supply of 18yr old Strath.

I left "happy", with Mrs willk in the drivers seat.
