Peter is right as I heard a friend was selling his car on ato trader and the number was taken and put on a stolen one they found in another part of the country he had not been too which is why I did mine, but to be fair mine takes little imagination due to my company name

I'm curious about blanking plates too. Do you drive down the road with half of it blanked in case someone wants to copy your number down and use it for illicit purposes? Surely it's in a more public domain on the road than it is on the web.

Personally it does not bother me, like you say it's available if people want it anyway. My point was just the owner may feel a little disgruntled if it was cloned having been put up by somebody else, on a forum he's nothing to do with, especially when they went to the trouble of protecting their own sorted now.
That being said its free advertising
My car came with private plate, name which has nothing to do with me, not really inclined to pay to change it though

Only about £100 to change it, you still have title to the named plate you can then sell it on if its a good plate ££££££

Alegedly a drain company poled up at our place to rod us out with the plate "WHO5HAT" on a square plate. Never saw it so could be an urban myth.

Apparently Jim Davidson had the number plate COM 1C and had the space taken out to read COM1C. When the police pulled him over he asked if they were doing him for altering the number plate? They said no they were doing him under the Trade Description Act

H5 GSY - Hardly worth the bother I'd have thought. I'd rather pocket the £100.

That'll probably be worth about £300 - £500 to buy.

I wouldn't worry about blanking out reg numbers in pictures unless you are including a phone number of the person who owns it....
this all started with cars for sale on ebay where car cloners would call or contact the owner if the vehicle and pretend to be interested in buying it. They would then try to extract as much information about the vehicle/owner as possible ie; phone number, address where the vehicle is registered, name of owner etc..... Much easier to clone that way...
I saw something not too long ago that the most expensive plate ever sold was the number 'K1NGS' I cant remember what it sold for but think it was around 100000K

If you stuck what ever plate you liked on your car, how many time would you need to get stopped before the fines came to the value of something like 'K1NGS' - loads cheaper to pay fines me thinks.
