So much for an easy Easter Monday off

I received a call yesterday to say part of the Estate had caught fire and looked like it was heading for the forestry block.

Myself and a couple other went for a look and sure enough the hill was well alight, spent all day and night trying to tackle it, turned out to be 2 miles wide. Had to call the chopper as it was entering our woodlands, unfortunately he had to be return to base for sunset so he only managed a couple of hours flying time. It was enough to kill the fire in the forestry but not the hill ground. Finally got it out this morning.

A few pictures.

Was up there last week - half way between Oban & Fort William. It was very dry very little snow and apparently hadn't rained there since early Feb!

It was above Corpach and Banavie outside Fort William.

We had a shower of rain on the afternoon of the 15th March and before that was the 17th Feb, the hills and forestry are tinder dry. It's so dry Scottish Water are BRINGING IN water to Mallaig as the supply for the town has dried up.

Indeed .. I've been thinning some self seeded birch today, but there's no way I'm burning it as the whole place is tinder dry at the moment, the frost hasn't helped it has dried things out even more. The skies around us intermittently go darker with smoke from around the coast.

Now the holiday season has started, some happy punters do silly stuff like setting off Chinese lanterns, these are deadly for us up here at the moment.

It's a frightening problem when you are at the mercy of the wind & weather I hope you've all managed to get some sense of normality back now you've got things under control
