during 1950s my old man was stationed on the raf base at Aden as a marine engineer with the air /sea rescue marine section using the fast high speed launches to rescue downed pilots or any sinking boats and just patroling the area in general ,he said piracy was rife then around the then somaliland and parts of the gulf of Aden ,, though in those days they used dhows ,,they never took hostages ,,mind ,, dead men tell no tales .

Small world - I was brought up around there - my father bought one of the old MTBs/rescue boats - sadly the main engines were knackered so he chucked some big diesels in - terrible!!!
The Yemeni people were lovely to us Brits - they really were - when we finally left the Russian moved in...........

He had to sit on a high seat between the engines ,,,,,bit noisy with just a small window to look out from ,,think he said most of the boats were built by Thonycroft with a few by Vosper and some had engines that were Naipier sea lion ,modifiyed aero engines ,,really bad starters ,,,until some one realised that they were using the wrong type of starter cartridge ,,,once running they were fine ,,think he said they would do around 40 knots .we have a spark plug from one in a box down in the celler, made partly from brass and there were gap less plugs out in those days, regards mart

I've heard of 'White Noise' but not brown. Is it like a loud fart?

Possibly, it depends on the tone. If there is a hint of gurgle it is more likely to be a shart.

Well, that's just my guess. One can understand the difficulty in both description and interpretation of such delicate nuances over the 'net.
Besides, I'm really not qualified to diagnose.

ACtually gentlemen,
I think you will find it is Brownian noise, named after Robert Brown.
Wikipedia, gotta love it.

<picks up pipe and glass of fine cognac>
Indeed, the Brownian motion creates the singular that is Brownian sound.
.... Unless of course you are being crass....

It may seem harsh but I really do think assaulting the hijacked ships despite the possiblity of hostages being killed or injured is the answer.
At the very least after the first few incidents they will stop attacking UK ships or crews because it won't be worth it and go attack somebody else.
The government has to make sure it holds to this and carries it out so there is no question of surviving a hostage taking of our folk to make it unattractive.
It may hurt some of our folk in the short term but the long term makes it better for the majority.
Plus I still don't understand why ships are forced to have armed troops aboard and/or convoy them through. 50 ships with one warship escorting them is impossible to hijack from a small boat...........
