Stop wasting our fish .
Hugh Fearnley - Whittingstall has started a campaign to stop the killing of fish in the North Sea .
He states that half the fish caught in the North Sea are thrown back overboard dead .
I've put my name down .

They have to do it or risk being prosecuted, high fines and even prison.

Yes, the Common Fisheries Policy is appalling.

From what I can gather is the net size is set to prevent undersize fish, but if you are fishing for one species and catch another which you've already had your qouta of then you HAVE to through it back.

We've already seen a stand-off between the Faroese and Scottish fisherman over their increased mackerel quotas. Those who make a living from the ocean have a responsibility to protect fish-stocks. So who's to blame here for the current situation, public demand, big business, EU bureaucrats, fisherman or the banks that fund the loans to purchase deep-water trawlers?

The CFP is a grotesque and appalling waste of the seas resources. "Out of sight, out of mind" springs to mind.
Imagine a similar policy for beef! "Shoot those cows John, but throw the black and white ones in the skip - we're over quota this week.
For those bored/boring enough to read it, here's the (sort of) perfect system employed by the Icelandic government: Clicky
You know it makes sense!!!

ITQs sound okay in principle when the 'quota' for a particular species of fish has been agreed by all countries based on scientific research. However Iceland and the Faroese want to increase their quota of mackerel simply because they're apparently plentiful this season. 'Goalposts' and 'move' come to mind. Yes, sovereign countries should have access to their own fishing grounds, however that shouldn't be to the detriment of everyone else.

Thanks to everyone for signing up to fish fight , I'm sure most of you have received emails from fish fight which helps to explain the red tape surrounding the Common Fisheries Policy and why discard is happening . Here's the link which explains why discard is happening and why the Common Fisheries needs to be reformed . Please "sign up" to help stop this appalling waste of good fish .
