Straight from the distillery.
This is one patient customer - biding its time for 14 years in American white oak before spending a final two years in ex-Amoroso Oloroso sherry casks for an unbelievably full-bodied finish. Christmas seems to come early with all sorts of treats - dark chocolate, orange and honey. Its 16-year odyssey has provided countless flavours for you to explore.
I can't disagree with what it says it's full and dark and lingers on the tongue. No iodine!!

I've got a bottle of Springbank (Special bottling for HMS Campbeltown) for drinking, another for staying sealed and a Springbank HMS Campbeltown decommissioning bottle for staying sealed.

Our affiliated port was (funny old thing) Campbeltown, where the Springbank distillery is. It's one of the smoothest whisky's I've tasted (apart from maybe Caol Isla) and has a really nice peaty/heather taste.

That's more like it. Does it mention on the bottle if it's had caramel added? I'll pick a bottle up in Feb

Remind me - (having just reminded myself of the subtitles of Laphroaig and wow the predictive text on this new toy knew it's name!) Is that the airport only one that tastes and smells a lot like you describe and only comes in handy 1L bottles outside the eu unless you want to sell your boat.

I always viewed it as an after dinner malt thats a little sweeter than the usual finish, like Dalwhinnie in that way, but without question its one of my favourites rich, christmas pudding, with a little smoke. Its getting harder to find nowadays, and BTW, I didnt particulary rate the 21 YO or the 15 over the 10 .. the 10 was fine enough last time I tried it. Its also another malt that I increase the amount of whisky to water ratio , just to increase all those flavours

Laphroaig is fine if you stay away from the 10 year old with its heavy iodine influence

Yeah, I can see what you mean. The distillery told us that they generally stay away from the "big occasion" years (such as 18 year, 21 year) except for VERY important reasons, and stick to the lower less "stand out" years such as 10, 12, 15, etc.

Interestingly the ship had a large 2 year bottle of 21 year malt given to the officers (wardroom), chief petty officers and petty officers messes at first commission. Two young officers "accidentally" drank the wardroom one when they ran out of normal whisky after a run ashore (severely ass-kicked for that), the petty officers took a vote and chose to open/drink theirs and the last time the ship went to Campbeltown representatives from Springbank offered £2000 for the one the CPOs had kept in a display cabinet!! (Must have been worth more, especially as it was 21 years in 1986 when commissioned). I left just before she decommissioned so I'm not sure what happened to it.

well your HMS one looks like its a £120 bottle now so be sure to enjoy s l o w l y ! You can still get some independent J&A Mitchell ones, but like I said are harder to get . Special finishes of 25 YO plus are commonly £500 bottles. Just goes to show what a fine investment whisky can be ? .. but like everything... it has to be the right one

Springbank is very unique with its flavours .. Its definatley a west coaster but somehow more mellow, dont get me wrong it will be like all the others in that there was the poorer years where it tasted nothing special, even a master blender who put it in the right casks could not forsee 30 years ahead with authority IMV and thats why its such a lottery.

That said .. If you have a flavour for a good Springbank, you should try Clynelish from Brora ... its a good west coaster too but is still in production,.. with a mighty fine flavour at reasonable money .. not the iodic or phenolic malts from Islay, but good smoke, and a little peat, with that slightly sweeter finish just like springbank If I was having a bet .. I'd find their good ones, and say they will be as good as the best Springbanks ever were ...... in time ...

I'll have to keep an eye out for that one! I do tend to prefer the more westerly produced ones - must be something to do with the peat/soil/heather/water over that way! Either that or the fact my grandma on my mums side was a MacFarlane from Oban!
