I spent a few months in Daewoo (Okpo) shipyard last year, and the speed they can knock a ship together is impressive.
They start by building transverse sections (blocks) on the dock side, and then when they are ready, lift them into the water, float/lift them into sequence in the floating dock, and weld them together.
The time taken to assemble the blocks to a finished 300Meter+ supertanker can be as low as 3 months, although when I was there, 4 months was normal.
A truly amazing experience.
