Transporting boat from Guernsey to UK mainland

Looking to move RIB on a trailer from Guernsey to UK mainland. Has anyone done it before if so please tell me about it. Are ferry charges through the roof?

Regards

Harry

I’ve done it the other way around and back, was about £800 but then we got a discount to £500 approx because the cabin place we stayed at had a discount arrangement with Condor.

Might be cheaper to go via France. Jersey to Granville & then take your choice of cheap crossings from France to UK.

Is it possible to get it put on the ferry as unaccompanied cargo? I don’t know how it works (but assume it is cheaper) but calmac do that - you’d be occupying one trailer space in one direction. Rather than that PLUS a return car journey. This is assuming you are buying it out there and the seller will drop it off at the ferry for you.

It hadn’t occurred to me that this was a one way trip, I’d assumed it was a holiday from Jersey to the UK.

Might want to try channel seaways. The boat can go unaccompanied then.

Not sure how the price works though

I looked into this last year; was looking at buying a 5.4m RIB from Guernsey. Seller was going to drop it off at the port; it can go as unaccompanied freight with Condor. Can't remember what the cost was but it didn't seem outrageous. Of course if you do it that way you're probably more likely to get hit with VAT and import charges - if you brought it back behind the car I would guess you'd be more likely simply to be treated as a tourist returning home after a holiday.

What sort of condition is the trailer in - might be worth dumping the trailer in the local market and pilot it back across the channel - buy a new trailer in the UK?

Try Heulin Renouf, they run a cargo service twice a week to Southampton. I have the phone number of the Master if you want to pm me. He arranged to bring a sports boat back for me.

You’re best to try Huelin Renouf, Condor and Alderney Shipping. All should be able to do it for you. Cost will typically depend on length and IIRC Condor aren’t keen on trailers longer than 6m though I have overcome that by quoting the boat length rather than the trailer length before now.
