Unidentified object

Found this on the west coast of Lewis earlier today after island hopping in Loch Roag and checking for flotsam and jetsam on one of the numerous islands. Always cautious with these things, as you often hear reports of unexploded ordnance. Measures approximately 24 inches by 2-3 inches diameter. Casing is aluminium or an alloy. No marking or maker stamps. Judging by what's left of the paint, it was yellow in a previous life. Any suggestions?

I meant is either end open, so you can see if it is hollow.

No idea. The end (left hand side) had a hole in it, but was very badly corroded.

Has there not been lots of phosphorous dumping in the past in that area?

Looks to me a bit like the main tube section from an old Ships M.O.B float smoke & the plastic float & light parts come off,
if you look the 2 rings around the tube stops the float from sliding off .Click image for larger version

Thanks for suggestions. I'll contact Stornoway coastguard and pinpoint the position, and they can decide what to do with it.

Update: Coastguard called in the mainland boys and auxilliary fire service here to assist. Turns out it was a smoke float but they reckon it was off a helicopter.
