Another GoPro here, mine has been quite badly abused and is still like new, in the video below it was being used without the housing.
If you watch Top Gear, Gadget Show, Red Bull F1 team or anything where they need to stick a camera in an awkward or vulnerable place they all use GoPros.
The only down side is the convex lens on the housing, great if you're surfing as it clears the water brilliantly but not so good at focusing if you want to take it diving.
Christmas is coming, those wonderful people at HM Revenue and Customs have sent me a nice little cheque, and I have been inspired by Mr Whisper
So, I know very little about video cameras, but I know that I want something that I can use on the RIB. I have seen good things about the GoPro HD, and I now see that there is a GoPro HD2 I think it is. Would I be making a smart move putting my money into one of these? Is there a suitable mounting for use on the A frame etc. Are they rugged? Anyone any experience of this latest model? Shoud I be considering anything else? As always, your thoughts appreciated
I have got one for my son you can buy extra attachments they also used them on I am a celebrity .
HD and 1080P is what you want for pic quality .
Merry Christmas
Tim

another vote for goPro, the word is they even survive seasheperd campaigns ;-) - The 1080 and Hero2 have more possibilties for bigger batteries and this new hero2 also has a remote which sounds handy ;-). If damage it is also easier to repair (for example replacable lenses for the casing)
How is everyone mounting these on the A frames?
There only seems to be sticky pads available and I don't trust this for bouncing around on the back of a RIB. I can't find any mounts that can be screwed or bolted on, what are others using to mount onto the boat?

I started off with the sticky pads and a lanyard, just in case, like. One on the console, one on the flat plate atop the A frame.
Rest assured, the sticky pads are like sh!t to a blanket to the point where I've given up with the lanyard as it was a pain to fit tightly and if it wasn't fitted tightly it thrashed around at speed and screwed up the audio recording.
GoPro now sell a foam device that sticks onto the camera housing...if the camera does fall off, at least it floats. Just as long as you know where
They also sell a roll bar mount - as in race car roll cages - that is a U-bolt type device that mechanically attaches to A frame tubing. It comes in several sizes...if you go that route check the dimensions on the Go Pro website first or talk to the guys at DogCamSport - they're very helpful
These guys Linky sell similar cameras to the GoPro but with a screen and a remote control - they also sell a good variety of mounts which use exactly the same system as GoPro - handy that!
I don't trust a sticky pad, even a 3m one so still looking for a mechanical fixing of some sort.
I saw the roll bar mounts and may go this way but would prefer something neater mounte on the top plate of the frame.
The plate the camera is fixed to in the box may even do if cut down slightly or I may cut out the suction mount and drill this.
I just find it surprising there is no fixed mount suitable for screwing to a flat surface other than sticky pads............
I am going to use it diving as well but with a second modified case and diferent mounts. The case for surface use is going to have the floaty door mod, not because there is any chance of finding if it falls off as speed but just in case it is accidentaly dropped overboard when mounting or similiar.

The roll bar mount is good I have one. The video below was taken today with my new HD Pro 2 using the mounting pad.
At the moment I'm looking at the prices of a 'gopro hero2' and I think the cheapest I have found it for is £259.99
Bump! where did you find that price? If you don't mind me asking. Looking to get meself a hero2

Go Pro systems work very well on the A Frame as well as suctioned onto the deck areas.
This vid was off the A Frame with go pro. I have also the active camera but keep failing to get best use of it, I have also bought the additional battery pack for HD Hero as it allows some 5 hrs of videoing http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=hISKvVIoYFk

I have found another shop that is local to me that will do it for £263 and if it goes wrong I can just take it back, I'll try and get a forum deal and give you the details if there is enough interest?

Yes that is the A frame and tube clamp and works well. I have both old and new go pros. Old is two aaa batteries and new is rechargeable unit from USB cable and has more features including additional battery pack or a view screen and they plan a remote very soon
