We saw it at RIAT in 2011.

As has been said already the noise was fantastic, but what really shocked me was how slow something that big could do a fly past nose up. It just sort of hung there making loads of noise and looking good.

Remember, it's designed to carry enough stuff to redecorate most of Moscow so when it's empty with minimal fuel there is a fair amount of spare lift available, 'cos it's all wing

Technically something like a Typhoon has enough thrust to hover in a vertically nose-up position, but I don't think they are allowed to try that at air shows

It must have a very low wing loading when empty and I am sure it doesn't carry half as much stuff as it use to when in service . I recall reading they stripped out alot of the wiring that wasn't needed anymore and just this saved considerable weight.

There is a great book ( and I think BBC documentary) about the Black Buck raid. As Bog monster said to be able to show 'them' that we could bomb I feel must have had a huge mental impact not only to the Islanders but also the troops on both sides.

I am sure I have the book on a shelf at home if anyone wanted to borrow it ..

It is the highlight of the Bournemouth Air displays for I think most down here ( but the 2 Tornados were a close second noise wise)

Ahh, but the Typhoon doesn't have thrust-vectoring so it would fall to one side fairly quickly.

You have a few Typhoons down there now, I believe?

"Vulcan 607" - a good read, as is "Phoenix Squadron" by the same author - how Ark Royal managed to get Buccaneers over British Honduras in the 1970s using good old British pluck and mettle. The telling sentence is close to the last - when things started happening in 1982 Mrs T said "But what about Ark Royal?". (It had been scrapped)
