whatever happens on their made for tv series, I acknowledge the fact that they are volunteers and committed and not sea savvy in some cases, but I also acknowledge that they have tried their best to put the activities of Japan's "research" fleet into the public sphere. For that they can be forgiven poor boat handling skills, misguided decisions, and the sort of command that comes from people whose passion often outweighs their abilities.
They are doing something about a cause they and I dare say the majority of people on this forum would ascribe to, whilst we merely discuss it from afar.
Think how much more effective they would be with sea skills that many of the forum members posess? At least we can ridicule them eh! Am sure the whaling fleet is hiring if you admire their boat handling skills more.
Sorry but for me its a black and white issue. You stand for whaling or you don't. And if you don't, then you need to ask yourself if denegrating the only people currently putting the cause on the mass media is constructive.

The cause is not an argument, what may be though is that as a charity, they could go a lot farther if they weren't wasting fundraised money replacing and/or fixing vessels wrecked through ignorance and incompetence.
I think that is the real gripe.

i've had this argument with non boaty friends who come up with stuff like "it's just a boat! their saving whales".
But the waist of (charity) money and equipment is just a crying shame .

You gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette, ask the RNLI. Luckily their budgets so huge they can afford their own training centre for all their crew that have never stepped foot on a boat before...

"A few" and whilst learning and practicing. Most if not all their mishaps are just plain numptiness, expensive calamities borne out of ignorance and dare I say it, in some cases, foolhardiness. That's the WW crews, not the RNLI!!!!

their mission statement uses words like "direct action" and "confront" - they operate in an extrememly harsh marine environment. They are not a trained navy, just volunteers, activists, who are passionate and willing to do whats necessary to stop the slaughter of whales. Stuff is bound to go wrong, and mistakes be made. In return for the $750,000 paid out by Discovery for "Access" to the Sea Shepherd boats this season, everything they do right and wrong becomes more amplified and public, unlike the RNLI who am sure have made expensive mistakes that never made the public eye. The RNLI are not a good example to hold up here. Better would be the likes of WWF and Greenpeace.....neither of which have any direct action in the southern ocean, preferring in the case of WWF to get into bed with major corporations like Coca Cola and indulge in Greenwashing, or in Greenpeace case to label Sea Shepherd nothing short of pirates (from the safety of their offices) and claim they are putting back the cause of anti whaling by entrenching the undecided on whaling Japanese population against them.
I find it hard to be dispassionate about a few boats and accidents where whaling is concerned. As has been said here - you have to break a few eggs. Until governments decide to police and conserve the oceans that surround them, then Sea Shepherd are all there is. Australia has already said its almost impossible to enforce the sanctions and laws placed on whaling in the Southern ocean whale Sanctuary. Ok ..will get off the soapbox.
