When men were men...
I can't remember if I've posted this before and cant find evidence of doing so, but this page has been bookmarked for years.
When engineering was done by men in brown shop-coats (white for management), the words "health" and "safety" had yet to appear in the same sentence and wearing a hat was de-rigeur....
Old things.

I was lucky enough to see a Doxford oposed piston engine running on a ship i visited in the early 90's.....fascinating bit of kit.

Its a good question 'why' .. and almost an embarrasment to be honest , we were a great country once who produced the finest engineering in the world .. not any more .. I blame all our politicians ... not just one half
nice pics to see .. thanks Hugh

There are some great engineers about but usually in garden sheds I know a chap that makes working models of these sort of things from scratch

Its not all bad - those pics were all:
- before ribs were invented
- when seagull's were considered state of the art in outboard tech
- when small boat owners all had to spend most of the winter sanding, varnishing/painting their wooden boats
- all navigation was by chart and dividers
oh, and there was no ribnet - so if you guys wanted to talk about boats you might have had to go and see real people...

I find the biggest difference between now and then is that if you managed to hurt yourself back then you were a numpty and had the p*ss taken out of you .
If you hurt yourself nowadays, it absolutely has to be someone else's fault .
sad really....

Thanks HughN, that's a fantastic post. You can almost smell the swarf and cutting oil, feel the heat and cover your ears to the noise. Fantastic.
Think that's the reason I love trailers - they're still so... I don't know, old fashioned? Agricultural? Love it, thanks again.
