Who knows about POP3....

........Traveling to Russia and numerous other CIS states along with Syria I have found myself being unable to connect to my host email account through a server called iPass.

I have been advised that I can get my emails directed from my host at work to a pop3 telephone.

Now all I ned to know is what the hell is a pop3 phone. I've scrolled the net a little but feel none the wiser.

Can anyone recommend a good phone - cost is not so much of an issue within reason or a good web site.

I have already looked at blackberry butthe package does not appeal to me.

Thanks in advance.

Graeme

Quite a few phones enable you to access emails - I'd recommend the Sony Ericcson P900i because of the decent screen size - the 02 XDA looks pretty good too - some of the smaller phones make it nigh on impossible to read emails. the vodafone store helped me set up email access so didnt have to wade through a huge manual...

Graeme,

I think you'll find it's all explained quite well in the following:

Инцидент произошел в поезде Ницца-Лион, где заложниками банды несовершеннолетних преступников стали несколько сот пассажиров. Президент страны Жак Ширак заявил сегодня, что правоохранительным органам поручено срочно выявить всех участников этой разнузданной акции и наказать по всей строгости закона.

babelfish translator says:

"Incident occurred in the train Nice- Lyon, where several hundred passengers became the hostages of the band of minor criminals. The President of the country Jacques Chirac stated today that to law-enforcement agencies it is charged to urgently reveal all participants in this unbridled action and to punish on the entire strictness of law"

You may find that iPASS dont have agreements with your local server(POP) hence the blocking. Hence the reason you are trying to bypass

Are you able to dial in?, whilst its not very secure it will help you find out the problem.

Also if its broadband, your local server will have numbers to used if not in the UK. Usually on the home page it tells you how to get in from abroad.

Also you maybe able to use a softphone.

I tend to use www.mail2web.com , and it has worked with all of the providers I have tried. If it lets you connect in the UK (when you are not dialed in through your normal ISP) then I can see no reason why it wouldn't work remotely.

I would have thought the problem you will have in some of your more "obscure" countries with a POP3 phone is getting a GPRS connection with an overseas phone/SIM - but perhaps they are more advanced than I imagine. (I know I have struggled to get GPRS working in some parts of western europe and the US! - I think simply because my SIM card wasn't local).

If you are using a PC/PCMCIA card in a laptop, you may need to take the sim card out and use a mobile 'phone to "register" it on the local network before returning it to the PC/PCMCIA card. I've only had this reported on certain types of Vodafone SIM cards.
