You can buy some software on the scheme. I believe you need a letter from yorur educational instiution which you then send to Microsft who then send you the software (the box in the shop just contains a form). I have a friend who's mum is a teacher and she is able to get it at the discount rate.

Tim, your status as a student on a full time course would qualify you as well.

I got mine as I was doing an Diploma/MSc at the time. However, I got it at PC World, and she said that I'd need to fill in a form and supply details (which I had as it was legit) - so imagine my surprise when I got home and found all the CDs in the box!!

I didn't have to show anything in the shop - and said 'Yes' on the install when it asks if you are either a student or teacher. I'm not sure if that's because the person on the till at PC World didn't know what they were doing, or just a mistake - but very convenient all the same.

And yes it supports all the popular Microsoft formats!!!

Have given it to a few of our clients who are very happy with it - remember it's FREE!!!
Hmm...it doesn't appear to be allowing downloads at the moment!!

Roy,

Your link works - but I can't seem to get to that bit. Where is the operating system and language selection bit that you refer to?

I am clicking into the 'download' tab, and then go into 'Download Central'. I then click the top (Open Office 2.0 Release Candidate) link - and then it can't find the server. The same happens if I click on 1.1.5 as well.

dont go for the release candidate version it is still in testing.

click on the latest stable release just below it in the list.

familiarise your self with the stable version before you join those out there on the bleeding edge !!!

OK - I'll follow your link. I'm still intrigued why it won't work on my machine though - do you need to be registered?

2 things though, this is the older version ( new one came out in 03?) and most importantly, we haven't got it yet!
And nor will we be getting it, they've been doing people all over the place (selling pirated copies, charging people twice etc.etc.) fortunately we've got our money back courtesy of Egg
