56ft Princess ?

What quals would someone need to be paid to skipper the above boat? . Its a private boat with non-paying passengers ( friends of the owner) .

I'd give it a go, but not without some good long practice first ...away from anything solid

Pete

I think it depends on whether or not the skipper is being paid more than just expenses. If so then it is a commercial passage.....and then you need commercially endorsed rya ticket or higher.

I might be wrong so wait to be shot down in flames!

Guy I know had a Princess 52'. I can assure you they do not manouver like a rib!

You will need a commercially endorsed YM, and the boat will need to be coded if you wish to be paid for your services!

Pete,

If the "Passengers" genuinely are friends of the owner, not business aquaintances being "entertained" then it's not a commercial operation and you are not required to have any qualifications other than the Owners insurance company may specify.

There's likely to be a clause in the policy stating "suitably experianced" etc.

Need to be sure on the "Friends".

Duncan

I don't think you are correct here.

Thanks for replies and PMs.

It really is friends of the owner - I am one and have been on the boat numerous times. They are looking for someone to drive it ( sensibly) while they drink champers etc . ( pic of me on board 2009)

While I have helmed it before its a little bigger than I am used to . So just wondering what my be needed as they would insist in paying me if I did it & to be fair I am not sure exactly what what my comm end adv PB covers .. some say 10m some say 24m ...?

Leaving aside the ' common sense' factor of me not being overly familiar with the boat, it will be busy out on sat , and salterns marina has a bugger of an exit/entrance .....

I was in the same situ, A friend of mine has a Beneteau Antares 13.80 meter, he is not confident in Helming it and tbh it is squashed into a tight spot in Torquay marina. the insurance stipulates at least i should have Advanced PB to helm it.
Twin engines are fab for manouveres but rubbish for jumping waves!!

24 meters, on a vessel or type of vessel you have experience on.

A wealthy retired hotelier pal of mine bought a beautiful 1997 Sabreline 36 Express Cruiser Power New and Used Boats for Sale from Pete Townsend.

He didn't have a 'scooby' about boats, his brief was 'comfy fishing boat'. I basically skippered it for a season for him until he 'learnt the ropes'. He said that his Wife never got over the urge to hide in the loo when ever he left or returned to berth.

With twin 300 CATS on shafts and little windage, it was a dream to handle, close quarter.

'Five Fifteen' eventually went to Holland.

Luckily, while his wife was hiding in the bog, CHARLIE was there to help with the mooring-up.

As you know, Nige spent a few days 'residing'on the boat after passing comment on dear Charlie's berthing assist. "YOU USELESS TWAT!"

Salterns is a tight marina to get a 56' boat out of and back into if you're not experienced.

But, you might be better 'qualified' than the owner's alternatives. I'd have a read of the insurance details also.

Agreed, 56' is a big barge, but with twins and thrusters, it might be a pussy cat. Wind would be my concern with a 3 storey MY.

I am almost certain that there was a scenario like this in the PPR course and I think it said that the boat does not need to be coded as it is a pleasure voyage but the skipper DOES need a ticket IF paid more than expenses......Doug are you there?

I have a friend in Poole that is on two weeks on two weeks off who could give you a bit of guidance if you are interested. He has Ocean YM Power, Deep Sea Masters and normally drives a 42 metre high speed craft around Europe.

He is an A1 ship & boat handler!

PM me if interested.

Thanks all. It is an easy boat to manage, and think as it's under 24m I would be fine. It is not coded but is Defo a private boat.

Plans have been made, but I know I'll have more fun and smiles in my own little rib tomorrow.
