Best supplier for kit to code a Rib
Hi Guys
I am currently in the process of coding my 7.5 Ribeye and have a couple of questions.
Do you know the best place to buy all the gear, is there a one stop shop or is it a case of different suppliers for everything. Any suggestions please.
Do you know the approx. timescale as to when I will receive the OK to operate assuming I buy the kit now. I am a commercial Yatchmaster Offshore.
Thanks
Topbuoy

Hi
I think you will find its cheaper in the longrun to hire the liferaft 12man about £550 per year and no servicing hassle
also you need to factor in the cost of the surveying society and surveyor

Topbuoy,
How many people are you going for coding for - and what category? Will 2 rafts fit on a 7.5metre RIB?!?
I've just coded my 7.8m Ribcraft to Cat 4 for 10 people - it was more expensive than I originally thought it would be, and took longer to do - but it wasn't that bad.
As you have found out, the real nasty shock is the liferaft - I rented one from Premium Liferaft (12 man) for £430-ish for 12 months. You will need to buy a mounting rack/frame if that is how you are going to mount it - they don't rent them. They will also sell you TPAs for £6.50, and some of the other kit you might need as well.
The other things I had to sort out (and wasn't expecting) were things like the auto fire extinguisher in the engine bay not counting towards the number of fire extinguishers, fitting a bilge alarm in the engine box and disconnecting the auto bilge pumps in the engine box (pollution regs). Oh, and the really annoying making 'ventilation' holes in my console to vent the batteries - which mow means that my nice and dry air-tight (ish) console which is full of electrics now seems to fill up with water overnight and is having a negative effect on my electrics (i.e. radio wouldn't turn on yesterday - pulled fuse out, scraped oxidation off, radio now works fine - v. annoying!!)
I got the rest of the equipment from the internet - but most of the major bits have actually come from Ocean Safety through a third party (but cheaper?).
ANYWAY...the other surprise was how long it took the paperwork to come through...
Dylan...

Outboards do not require the above except for the Console venting A mushroom vent works very well and can be closed in bad weather

Also most Importantly find a surveyor you can talk to, because every thing is not set in stone .Look at all the threads about Freeboard height

Happy to recommend Duncan (who posts on here as Searider) and unlike some surveyors I have met he actually knows what he is talking about when it comes to ribs.
http://www.ceproof.com/CEproof_Marine.htm
The paper trail took a couple of weeks through the YDSA.

I realise that the regs for an inboard is different to an outboard - I was just pointing out that it wasn't as simple as I thought (hoped) it was going to be.
If using petrol outboards, and you have built in tanks, then you need to fit a hydrocarbon sensor - etc etc etc.
I used MECAL/MCG to code mine - as they have done the type approval work for the Ribcraft range it seemed like a good idea. The paperwork took nearly 3 weeks - and it was suposed to have been 'rushed'.
The surveyor was excellent - he even helped me fit the second fuel isolator while he was there!!

Paperwork processing
At busy times of year it can take the Certifying Authority a while to process all of the paperwork.
The busiest time of year is between easter and Cowes Week - no surprises there. Why dont we all look at the coding of our boats in November when we all have plenty of time?
As an example it has been taking approximately 2 weeks to process the forms by the YBDSA in the busy periods. One week is typical out of season.
If anyone is in a real hurry they do now offer a fast track service but there is an extra cost to this.
Thanks for the recommendations chaps.
