Will it/they have CE decalls? Before I retired it was illegal to use them, and it was a hell of a job to get them CE aproved.

I've bought a few new Merc motors from the USA over the years, and found it very hard to buy at the advertised price. They quite often include a "price rebate", but that's only available to a US customer. Also, alot of dealers out there won't ship overseas, it's either against their dealer agreement, of they can't be arsed. Some won't even ship inter-state.

Last pair of 200hp motors I bought were £400 each to ship, plus duty of 2.7% on cost of motor, shipping and insurance, then vat on the total. Barrus wouldn't even discuss warranty due to "grey import issues".

In theory, CE isn't needed, if they're for commercial use.

I bought my optic's from the US, 2nd hand from a big ebay seller. Shipping was around £500. The only hard part was getting them from UK to CI without paying VAT, had to employ a specialist to take them into bond etc. £500 to get across the atlantic, another £500 to cross the channel!

CE marking only required for recreational craft directive compliance, so if it is not a recreational craft, it seems no need (as per 2 strokes etc).

Right. I thought that just about everything had to be CE marked these days. All our (industrial) kit that we install has to be CE marked, along with the tools that we use to install it, & the PPE that we wear. Even the raw steel that we use to fabricate structures has to be CE marked nowadays. I'm surprised that you'd be allowed to import/buy/use non-CE marked kit into the UK, obviously the Brussels politniks have missed a trick.

There are, if I am up to date, 20 product directives which enable you to attach CE marks to products. The product has to fall within the strict criteria that define that directive to be eligible for marking. One of the categories is electrical goods though so that obviously covers a huge range of stuff. PPE is another category, which in the workplace is prevalent, and construction products too... The other common ones are toys (which have some weird exclusions - so jigsaws are toys unless they have more than 500 pieces!), medical devices (only applies to human medicine - not animals), likewise the recreational craft rules only apply to boats (and engines) intended for leisure use.

I did say "in theory" but I'm pretty sure I'm correct. The Recreational Craft Directive is a bit of a minefield, and 16 years after it came into effect there's still rules that need sorting.
