Hi Rogue
Thanks for the reply, I am interested in the south west area but due to the lack of current operators in the region, I guess prices would be similar in areas of current activity supporting the oil and gas industry in the North of Scotland and the off-shore wind farms in the West of Wales and East of England.
Thanks
Shaggy

Aberdeen and the rest of the oils ports are extremely expensive,
you may find your dockyard facilities available at Portland.
Ship repair there is a reasonably priced yard in Hull and the Clydebank yard (Fergusons ?) I'll confirm that made the Torpoint ferry is looking for work. They certainly were when we towed the fkkr down about three months ago Also Appledore in Devon are in need of work
Towing give Jon eveleigh a call at griffin marine and towage a call he runs two sweet and powerful tugs. on this Forum you might find most help from Alex Brown. Tug talk is a tug forum you could join foe more info.

Fergusons at Port Glasgow are a good family run yard and also Garvel Dry Dock in Greenock are a good ship repair yard. You also have Ardmaleish Boat Yard on Bute that build/repair all types of Vessels. There are another couple of small yards on the Clyde and also BAe and Uie at Glasgow.
Cheers
Andy

Thanks Shaggy

Rhib Contract Hire Rates
We work on a rough figure of c. £1000 per day for a 10m or 11m RHIB (short term) and decreasibng the longer the contract. (A 3 month contract daily rate could be as little as £450 per day but would be for 90 days irresepctive of whether the boat sailed or not) This is pretty much what the Quinquari family of big RHIBS tend to operate on.
This figure can include fuel or you can add the fuel on depending on who the client is and how desperate they are. (ie US clients and MoD pay fuel on top)
All our work to date has been short notice, panic fixing, term stuff so the £1K figure is a good starting point for negotiation. We have come across some who go in much cheaper to guarantee the contract. I am now very wary of going in too cheap as once the crew salary, engine hours, boat damage (it always seems to get scuffed no matter how careful the coxswain), fuel useage, insurance premiums etc etc come off the bill you could be left with next to bugger all!
Hope this helps.

Hi John
Thank you for your time in responding and with the great info , what is usually classed as a day, 8 hours or until the work is complete?
Rouge I'm afraid I haven’t heard of Dave Barrable, where is he located in Cornwall and what service does he offer, Alex is going to ask around at work reference the Tug rates so hopefully have a good idea there soon.
Thanks again all
Shaggy

Just noticed this thread Shaggy, our neighbour is a guy called John Parsloe. He runs a private tug operation based in Falmouth. He's a nice bloke, you could come here and have a beer and a chat with him anytime.
Decent bit of surf for the next few days.

Shaggy,
This fee generally covers a 24 hour period!! (Not usually at sea for the full duration unless it is with our US or MoD customers). It all depends on the job. For escort duties or windfarm transfers we will do a couple of runs in the morning, then stand down for a bit. Transfer out equipment over lunch and then do a personnell change over in the afternoon. Often they want the boat on standby for all other times at an agreed "Notice To Move" ie 1 hours notice to collect etc. This is where you juggle the price. ie If the daily rate is generally £1K but they only want a run in the morning and a run in the afternoon you can drop your price and negotiate.....maybe!
Hope this helps.

Hello Shaggy,
I assume you're thinking about tugs that come under the small commercial vessel code under 24metres are you?
Locally, having a rib for the day including crew is between £450 to £550 (this is just 8hr(ish) day though, and not a 24hr period day).
I assume these sort of charges vary around the country - for towage, I think we work on a per job basis as opposed to per day ie towing a barge out of dry dock is one job, and 5mins later towing something else into dry dock is another job. I forgot to ask today will remember tomorrow though - have sent an e-mail to myself at work.....

Hi Alex
I like that system will have to use it myself
In terms of size of vessel a figure of 30m to 60m was mentioned, the device they want to tow to the mooring has a Displacement of 700 tonnes (including ballast) so not sure really how big it needs to be but that seems quite big to me.

Sorry Shaggy, I failed to read your initial post properly. If you're looking for 30metres plus on tug size, then you could give Svitzer ( http://www.svitzer.co.uk/) a call. They have fairly hefty tugs, scattered around the uk including down this way - their newer tugs are superb craft.
For barges and workboats, your best bet would be to get hold of Williams Shipping... they have barges, workboats, small tugs etc... and would probably be able to help you out on all the stuff you asked about in your original post. Goto http://www.wmps.co.uk/ to see what they're about - wmps is Williams Marine and Port Services, their local base in Pembrokeshire. They have some good little Damen stantugs, as well as other various craft for different purposes.
I could ask our lot for a day rate on a tug, but the cost I'd get could be completely different to what they'd say when they know what the job is.... it may be easier to just ask the people directly for a cost I think.
-Alex
